Workshops are generally available throughout Semester 1 of the academic year. All workshops are free and some are held in the Counselling and Disability Service office, Ground Floor, Horace Lamb Building, North Terrace Campus [Map Reference G9]. To book a place, please telephone (+61 8) 8303 5663.

Meditation - Four Week Induction
Meditation is an ancient skill that can be learnt in modern times. Traditionally meditation was used to overcome mental suffering, and is now being used to overcome stress, anxiety, depression and improve wellbeing. You will learn meditations that cultivate concentration, kindness and mindfulness. Come along and discover how meditation can benefit your life.

Visualisation to Enhance Wellbeing
The mind is amazingly powerful and can either enhance or inhibit the achievement of your study goals. This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to connect to your mind in a calm and affirming way that will help you clearly visualise your success at uni. You will be able to enjoy a progressive relaxation followed by a guided visualisation during which you will be able to focus on achieving your own personal study goals in a way which is calm and confident.

Balance Study & Life
It is difficult to balance study & life (sleep, relationships, social life and work). If you spend too much time on study you may not study effectively because you have lost the chance to recharge yourself. If you spend too much time on non study activities you will not have enough time to study. Balance study & life well and you will achieve the best you can. This workshop will help you get the balance right.

Managing Your Time
‘Time’ is arguably our most precious resource. It’s important to use it wisely in order to effectively deal with the demands of University life. Research shows that good time management skills can contribute to academic success. Time Management skills can be learnt and developed to also promote greater satisfaction with your life in general. This workshop will explore ideas that can assist you to better manage your time.

Mind-Body Yoga
This yoga class is designed to teach a series of mind-body skills which can be used for generally feeling good, focussing better at study or in the management of anxiety, stress or depression. As well as a series of physical movements (asana), it will focus on yoga breathing (pranayama) and meditation.

Managing stress and being a successful student
A certain amount of stress and worry are an inevitable and necessary part of being a student. If stress and worry become too much, they interfere with study. If you manage stress and worry correctly you will become a more successful student. Stress and worry can be managed by developing a lifestyle that keeps them under control. This workshop will describe that lifestyle.

Managing a PhD (for 1st year PhD students)
Embarking on the PhD journey can be both exciting and daunting. This workshop will explore a particularly important aspect of this journey, namely self-management strategies (including work-life balance, supervision, maintaining motivation). It will also investigate what you can do to ensure that you are prepared to deal with the ’ups and downs’ of the PhD process.

Improve your sleep
Sleep is one of the main ways we rejuvenate and refresh ourselves, allowing us to be eff ective in our waking life. Good sleep is a skill that can be learnt. In this workshop you will learn how to organise your life so that you will improve the quality of your sleep, becoming clearer, more alert, and more productive as a student.

Overcoming Procrastination
Procrastination is a great waste in a student's life. Procrastination is resting with guilt which is not really resting or it is studying while doing something else which is not really studying. It is best to either study efficiently or rest effectively. You will learn how to do this.

Getting Back on Track
Sometimes students find that the focus of their lives has shifted from study and then realise they have fallen behind and need to refocus. This workshop will provide 10 simple tips to help get back on track with study. They are tips that other students have found helpful.

Assisting students in distress
A one-hour session that will provide staff with information about:
- How to talk with a distressed student
- How to quickly access support for a distressed student
- What to do if a student is at risk of suicide or threatening to harm others
- Practical resources for students on campus (eg Accommodation, Health Service)
