Diagnostic Assessment in the Molecular Life Sciences

7 May: Molecular Life Science Seminar Room, Level 5

This seminar is the culmination of an ALTC project with Tony Wright (UQ), Susan Howitt (ANU) and Susan Hamilton (Qld), together with two international colleagues Manuel Costa (Portugal) and Trevor Anderson (South Africa) who have been involved in an ALTC-funded project entitled

" Diagnostic Assessment in the Molecular Life Sciences: development of a concept inventory".

The concept inventory has been developed over the past two years and trialled extensively. It is designed specifically to test understanding amongst beginning students of key concepts from chemistry and biology that form an essential foundation for subsequent courses.

Team-Based Learning: a workshop series

5 and 6 May

Presented by Jim Sibley (Director, Centre for Instructional Support, Faculty of Applied Science, University of British Columbia, Canada).

Team-Based Learning is a teaching approach designed specifically for
large classes.  It uses student teams to create active and dynamic
learning in lectures and seminars, and to put an emphasis on student
accountability for learning.  It positions the lecturer as an expert guide
available to students as they engage with core concepts in preparatory
readings and then in discussion and activities in class.

TBL is a flexible approach that uses a variety of strategies that can be
adopted or adapted to suit any teaching context.

Jim Sibley is an international leader in the field of Team-Based Learning.  As Director
of the Centre for Instructional Support at the University of British Colombia, he has
been involved in developing and implementing over 25 TBL courses over the past 7
years.

The series will include four workshops:

1:  An Introduction to Team-Based Learning (TBL), 10:30am-1:30pm, 5 May, Napier 208
2:  Using TBL Strategies in Lecture-Based Courses, 2:30pm-5:00pm, 5 May, SANTAS Lecture Theatre (Marjoribanks 126)
3:  Developing Effective Multiple-Choice Questions, 9:30am-12:30pm, 6 May, SANTAS Lecture Theatre (Marjoribanks 126)
4:  Developing TBL Application Activities, 1:30pm-4:30pm, 6 May, SANTAS Lecture Theatre (Marjoribanks 126)

Team-Based Learning: a seminar/workshop presentation

10 December: Rm 1.28 (Marjoribanks BANK SA Teaching Suite), NEXUS 10.

Presented by Cate Jerram (Business School, University of Adelaide).

Team-Based Learning is a teaching approach that uses student 'teams' to create accelerated active/dynamic learning in lectures, and put an emphasis on student accountability for learning.  It changes the lecturer's role from that of the 'Sage on the Stage' who tells students what the textbook says and what to learn or do, ato that of an expert guide available to students as they enage with core concepts in discussion and activities in class, having already done preparatory reading and assignments.  This flexible approach can be adopted in whole or in part to suit your teaching context.

This seminar/workshop will include: an introduction to the principles of TBL; and a demonstration of the core pracfices, method and methodology.  It will allow you to sample the ways in which TBL might work for you in the classroom.
