Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement
The Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) is a Commonwealth initiative that has been introduced to assist in both national and international recognition of Australian qualifications and to promote international mobility and professional recognition of graduates. The Graduation Statement is additional to other documentation such as degree certificates and academic transcripts and is based on nationally agreed specifications approved by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). You can find out more about the AHEGS on the DEEWR Graduation Statement website at: http://www.deewr.gov.au/highereducation/programs/quality/pages/ahegs.aspx
The Graduation Statement provides a description of the award, the awarding institution, a list of the student's academic achievements relevant to the degree and details of the Australian Higher Education System.
For Higher Degree by Research students, the AHEGS includes an abstract of up to 100 words which describes the research undertaken. It is intended to provide potential employers and other institutions with a greater understanding of the achievements of the graduate. Background information on the Graduation Statement is available from the DEEWR website.
A complimentary AHEGS is issued to all University of Adelaide students.
To enable an AHEGS to be provided, you MUST submit a 100 word (maximum) thesis abstract to the Graduate Centre, prior to lodging your Final thesis copies. As provision of an AHEGS is a Government requirement, you will not be eligible for conferral and attendance at a Graduation Presentation Ceremony until you have provided the abstract. The procedure is as follows:
Procedure
- Download and save a copy of the AHEGS Thesis Abstract Collection Template, which is available from the Graduate Centre website at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/ahegs/;
- Enter your abstract, into the Excel template in a maximum of 100 words and email it to your principal supervisor for feedback. Please note that the abstract must be in plain text with no formatting (e.g. bold, italics), symbols or sub/super-scripts, as formatting is not recognised by PeopleSoft;
- Once you have agreed on the wording of the abstract with your supervisor, email the final version to both graduate.centre@adelaide.edu.au and your supervisor using your Student ID, School and AHEGS Thesis Abstract as the title of the email. In the body of the email, please request that your supervisor confirm, by way of return email to the Graduate Centre that he or she is happy with the abstract that you have provided;
- Once the Graduate Centre has received your abstract and endorsement of the wording from your principal supervisor, the abstract will be copied onto your AHEGS, ensuring that your Statement will be finalised in time for your Graduation.
