Uni in the NewsText rises to the task of bushfire alertsA bushfire monitoring system that utilises mobile communications technology could be used to alert home owners and authorities with an early-warning message. Under development at the University of Adelaide, the smart bushfire monitoring and detection system uses SMS (short message service) through GSM (global system for mobile) communications technology. Senior researcher Dr Said Al-Sarawi, from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said the system could be incorporated into current and new homes to warn of and monitor bushfires. The device includes temperature and humidity sensors that are connected to a microcontroller, which can interface with a GPS receiver to report position and a GSM module to communicate sensory information. "What makes the device unique is it is fairly small, well integrated and reasonably low-cost because it is already building on existing technologies," Dr Al-Sarawi said. Source: The Australian, 2 February 2010 Adelaide to become bike city, says expertBikes could outnumber cars on city streets in just 25 years if Associate Professor Ineke Spapé has anything to do with it. The Dutch traffic and urban engineer said Adelaide is "ideal" to become a more cycle-friendly city, it just needs a good road network, segregated bike lanes and proper planning. Ineke Spapé was a guest speaker at the Australian Cycling Conference, hosted by the University of Adelaide. She said the city needed more dedicated bike parking and lanes. University of Adelaide transport expert Dr Jennifer Bonham, from the Discipline of Geographical and Environmental Studies, said bike companies should also start making more safer, sturdier "straight up bikes" because they allowed riders to see better. With the University's research identifying cycling as the third most popular form of exercise in SA, Ineke Spapé said there was no better time to transform the city. General Information for StaffKey Indigenous UnitIn December 2009, the Vice-Chancellor & President approved a recommendation from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Working Party (https://www.adelaide.edu.au/dvca/committee/atsi_wp/) that the Centre for Australian Indigenous Research and Studies (CAIRS) be renamed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education: Wilto Yerlo and relocated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to the Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic). (The Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) has been relocated to the Elder Conservatorium of Music, as recommended by the Review of CASM in 2008). The location and contact details for Wilto Yerlo will remain the same. Professor Roger Thomas, Dean, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education: Wilto Yerlo, will head the new unit.
Campus Services UpdateBarry Michels, Manager, Campus Services has taken extended leave until his retirement at the end of the year. Over this period an interim Campus Services organisation structure has been established with Dale Washington filling the Manager, Campus Services role while longer term arrangements are being determined and finalised. The attached Interim Campus Services Organisation Chart (ppt) sets out the changed reporting arrangements. Please update any phone and/or contact lists in your areas, in particular those relating to emergency and after hours contacts for the Manager, Campus Services. Human Resources Processing Timelines for Payroll-Related TransactionsHR transactions that are prompted by an action arising in a local area within the University are entered into the HR system as soon as possible after receipt of completed and duly authorised documentation. The 2010 cut off dates ensure that priority is assigned to documentation that is completed correctly and received on time in order that payment associated with that transaction can be facilitated on time. This series, hosted by Online Learning at CLPD, complement and extend the Introduction to MyUni and Effective Use of MyUni workshops conducted by ITS Training. There are five themes for 2010: Designing for Online learning; Online Administration; Assessing Online; Collaborative Learning; and Using Voice.

Academics are reminded that it is a requirement for tenure confirmation to provide evidence of completion of the Teaching @ University course, or an equivalent course or higher qualification. The T@U course is available twice a year in the CLPD. It consists of eight half-day sessions. Assessment requirements include engagement in all eight sessions, online Discussion Board interactions with colleagues, the planning and development of a Learning and Teaching project, submission of a Project Report, Personal Learning Reflections, a Teaching Portfolio and a Report on a Peer Observation of your teaching.
In Semester 1, T@U is scheduled on Wednesday mornings from 10 March to 12 May; and in Semester 2, on Thursday afternoons from 29 July to 16 September.

Assistance in teaching for improving student learning is available for newly appointed lecturers, tutors and demonstrators. A series of self-access modules are available online from the CLPD website. The new and revised modules now cover 12 topics, from setting learning objectives, to teaching large and small classes, online learning, assessment, evaluation and curriculum design.

The focus of the 2010 Cultural Diversity Program is on exploring the value of diversity in education. Workshops are designed to provide participants with opportunities to make the most of the cultural and linguistic diversity of our students and staff.
Faculties and Divisions are invited to contact the CLPD with requests to collaborate in providing cultural diversity workshops within their Schools or Units. These workshops will enable staff to raise issues, access information and develop strategies for interacting effectively in diverse global communities.
In addition, four independent staff development modules are offered centrally by the CLPD and the Adelaide Graduate Centre. These are designed to complement each other; professional and academic staff may choose to attend one or more sessions, according to their needs.

All commencing international Research students should note that participation in the Integrated Bridging Program - Research (IBP-R) is a mandatory part of the Core Component of the Structured Program (CCSP). Local students with English as an Additional Language can also choose to participate.
The IBP-R Induction for Semester 1, 2010 will be held on Tuesday 2 March at 12:00pm - 2:00pm in the Flentje Lecture Theatre, Plaza Building, North Terrace Campus. A diagnostic task will be included at this time to assist students in their choice of participation level.

The Exploring Supervision Program provides professional development for HDR supervisors. Each semester we present a series of three interactive workshops, together with a range of tools, techniques and resources, covering key topics in HDR supervision. In addition, completion of the full module of the program leads to registration as a principal HDR supervisor.
