Uni in the News

Northern floods may help Murray-Darling

Torrential rain falling on southwest Queensland may make its way south to refresh the Murray-Darling system, according to one of Australia's leading water policy experts. Professor Mike Young, director of the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide, said it's possible a large amount of water will flow through, and much of the water that had poured into the Warrego River system would join the Darling River. From the Darling it will quickly flow into the Murray River system unless people try to halt the flow, he said. The process to release water downstream is complicated. Once the Menindee Lakes reach a specified height, control of the water transfers from NSW to the Murray Darling Basin Authority. "The big question which everybody will be asking is 'Will it be possible for NSW to manage the system ... or are they going to have to let it flow through?'" Professor Young said.

General Information for Staff

Sustainable Research Excellence: Survey 1

Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE) is a new Federal Government initiative aimed at supporting the indirect costs of research in Australian universities.

The University of Adelaide is required to participate in SRE in order to gain access to new funds, which we estimate could amount to a further $15-20M per year based on current levels of Category 1 income.

This funding will help the University provide ongoing research infrastructure and provide critical funding for new research initiatives.

Under SRE, we are required to conduct two Staff Time Use surveys in the first half of 2010. Survey 1 starts on Monday 15 March and runs for two weeks.

It is mandatory for all academic staff and all professional staff attached to a Faculty to complete Survey 1.

Survey participants will need to complete a time sheet recording how many hours they spend on a set of defined activities over the survey period. Completing the survey should take no more than about 10 minutes per week.

All staff required to participate will receive an email on Monday 15 March with a link to the online survey tool. The survey must be completed by close of business, Monday 29 March.

Call for volunteers for April Graduations

The April graduations will be held from 12-19 April 2010 and volunteers are needed to help out with the ceremonies.

These ceremonies are major public events for the University and attended by up to 1,000 people per ceremony. It is important that we provide the graduands and their guests with the best opportunity to enjoy the experience and Graduations can only do that with the assistance of your wonderful staff.

Therefore, the Graduations Office asks for your help in encouraging staff from your areas to volunteer for the various roles and responsibilities involved in the ceremonies to ensure they run smoothly.

Reminder – April 2010 Graduation Presentation Ceremonies

Staff are reminded that the deadline for indicating your attendance at the April 2010 graduation ceremonies is fast approaching!

Twelve ceremonies will be held, two on Monday 12 April 2010, two on Tuesday 13 April 2010, two on Wednesday 14 April 2010, two on Thursday 15 April 2010, two on Friday 16 April 2010 and two on Monday 19 April 2010.

Endorsement of the revised HSW Policy and new HSW Handbook

Following extensive consultation and review, the HSW Policy and associated processes within the HSW Handbook were approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 11 February 2010.

The HSW Policy objective is aligned with the University's strategic plan and aims to provide a framework which will create and engender a University culture that values health, safety and wellbeing as fundamental components of the work environment, supported by safe systems of work, appropriate governance, training, management structures and operational strategies. The revised HSW Policy is available on the Policies website:

The HSW Handbook has been developed in consultation with stakeholders and replaces all other existing OHS Policies, Procedures and Guidelines. The new format now provides the practical steps required to meet the responsibilities outlined, all the necessary tools to complete the activities and performance measures to monitor the activities. Hyperlinks are available within the document to assist with easy navigation to the relevant information and resources.

Launch of the New Health Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Website

The HSW Team are pleased to advise that our new website was launched on 26 February 2010.

The new website provides you with quick and easy access to a range of new and revised information including:

• the revised HSW Policy;
• the new HSW Handbook which provides practical information to assist you to work safely;
• an A-Z list of forms, tools and templates;
• a new web-based HSW Induction (which will replace the on-line HSW induction program);
• a quick link to key sites, forms and information on the homepage; and
• the 2010 HSW Training Schedule and online booking facility.

The new HSW website can be found at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/ohs/. We have kept the old URL to ensure that your existing links and favourites to our website are maintained.

To assist you with the transition to the new website, a list of new URLs for frequently visited pages (including a mapping of the old to the new links) is available on the HSW website.

Launch of the new web-based Induction Program (formerly the OHS on-line induction program)

On 26 February 2010, the new web-based induction program was launched in conjunction with the new HSW Handbook.

The revised program now only takes 15 minutes (approximately) to complete and also provides a brochure which can be printed and used as a resource.

The new process can be accessed from the HSW website's homepage under Quick Links.

Manager's/Supervisors should refer to the HSW Chapter for Induction (https://www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/ohs/handbook/induction/) before utilising this version, to identify who is required to complete the web-based induction as some exemptions/discretions are listed on page 1 of the chapter.

Call for applications for Academic Promotion to Level B & C

Staff and titleholders wishing to apply for promotion to Level B or Level C only are now invited to submit their applications.

Promotion is an important way that the University of Adelaide recognises the outstanding performance of Academic staff. We would encourage all staff who believe they meet the relevant promotion criteria to submit an application in 2010.

Forms & Processes for Managing Casual Staff

From 4 March 2010, some minor changes have been made to the forms / processes for managing casual staff:

1. Amendments to the Offer of Casual Employment - Academic Staff (Semester)
Previously the "Amendment to the Offer of Casual Employment - Academic Staff (Semester)" was a complete replacement of the original document. This has been a source of frustration for local areas who find this an excessive imposition of time, so to streamline this process the amendment form has changed to include only the current work commitment details and the amended details. The new amendment form, just like the previous amendment process, still requires the signature of the casual employee as this is a change to the original sessions offered.

2. Casual contracts for academic staff
In instances where casual employees employed using the Offer of Casual Employment – Academic Staff (Semester), i.e. undertaking semester teaching activities, are required to carry out additional work beyond the end of the semester e.g. Marking, etc. please ensure that the "Employment Period" dates have been extended to cover ad hoc additional work. Payment for the additional ad hoc work will only be made upon submission of the Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff – Sessional rates.

3. Casual Payment Claim Forms for Academic Staff
From Thursday 4 March 2010, the current Casual Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff will be replaced with two new forms available on the HR website as follows:

• Casual Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff – Ad hoc (xls)
• Casual Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff – Sessional (xls)

4. Original signatures
To accommodate the logistics of staff members who are located remotely, a scanned employee signature on a timesheet is acceptable if accompanied by original university authoriser signature.

Special Studies Program (SSP)

Special Studies commencing January - December 2011
Applications are now invited for programs of Special Studies for the period January 2011 - December 2011.

First semester use of Hughes Lecture Theatre

In line with the development of the new Hughes Plaza Learning Hub (at the centre of the campus), the first stage of works has commenced. As such, the Hughes Lecture Theatre will be closed for the first semester only. Due to this we have relocated lecture groups based in Hughes to various venues around the Campus, including Freemasons Hall and Scots Church on North Terrace. Freemasons Hall is currently being refurbished as a lecture theatre, with new chairs installed on Friday 26 February 2010, and tablets due to be added to the chairs in the week starting Monday 8 March 2010.

James Hansen – After Copenhagen: Looking for Real Solutions

The Government of South Australia in association with the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide, are hosting Dr James Hansen at a public event.

Dr James Hansen is considered one of the world's leading scientists on climate issues. Thirty years ago, he created one of the world's first climate models and is sometimes referred to as "father" or "grandfather of global warming". He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, Adjunct Professor at Columbia University and head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City.

Dr Hansen will be speaking about his new book Storms of My Grandchildren, covering his views on climate change and obtaining real solutions to these problems.

The University of Adelaide Law School and the School of History and Politics announce a Staff Seminar:

"William Blackstone and the Origins of Modern Constitutionalism"
Speaker: Professor Horst Dippel
Date/Time: Friday 12 March 2010, 2:00pm
Venue: Moot Court Room, Ligertwood Building, Law School

Topic: This paper demonstrates that Blackstone's Commentaries were highly influential in the British North American colonies in relation both to the common law and to constitutional ideas. Indeed, the established wisdom that Americans extracted from Blackstone their common law but rejected the constitutional ideas found there is altogether misleading. Blackstone was not only readily at hand when constitutional issues were debated in the US but there were also a number of constitutional topics in which the Commentaries played a crucial role in the American Constitutional debates. This is particularly true for the "American" idea of checks and balances.

Professor Horst Dippel taught British and American history at the University of Kassel, Germany, from 1992 through 2009. His major field of research is the history of modern constitutionalism. He has published widely in this area, including seven volumes of Constitutional Documents of the United States of America, 1776-1860, in the series Constitutions of the World from the End of the 18th Century through the Middle of the 19th Century, of which he is editor-in-chief (25 volumes to date). Erica Haimes was the Founding Executive Director of the PEALS (Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences) Research Centre (1998‐2008) where she is now Professorial Fellow; she is also Professor of Sociology in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, Newcastle University, UK. Her research interests include: interdisciplinary research on social, ethical and legal aspects of the life sciences; reproductive and genetic technologies; the socio‐ethical aspects of the provision of human tissue for research, and the relationship between states, families and medicine with a focus on assisted conception.

Future Research Leaders Program

The Future Research Leaders program has been developed collaboratively by the Go8 universities, and is delivered in full each semester for the benefit of the research community of the University of Adelaide. The program is aimed at current and aspiring research leaders, and seeks to build a range of skills and knowledge critical to successful research leadership and management.

There are eight modules in the program, together with a researcher orientation module. Modules are undertaken by a combination of online study, independent research and a face-to-face workshop. Do just one module, or do as many as you like. It's up to you.

Research Strategy & Planning Module 1
Effective research must be carefully planned to achieve the best outcomes. This module explores the links between your University's overall research strategy, your own research, the scoping and conceptualising of the project prior to the research commencing and research project management.

Exploring Supervision Program

The Exploring Supervision Program provides professional development for HDR supervisors, offering a series of three interactive workshops on key topics in HDR supervision, and providing a range of supporting tools and resources. Completion of the full module of the program leads to principal researcher supervisor status.

In 2010 we are offering the workshops in three concentrated blocks – in the mid-semester break after Easter, at the end of first semester, and at the end of second semester. You can do it all in one block, or as individual workshops to suit your purposes and/or timetable. There's no set order, you don't have to do them all in one go, and it's all FREE!
