Govts urged to get cracking on water plan

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) and a leading University of Adelaide ecologist have warned that the new national water agreement to take over the Murray-Darling Basin will be doomed to failure unless it is acted on immediately. The ACF said governments must make a concerted effort to buy back water for the Murray-Darling system to make the $10 billion national water plan a success. "It requires urgent action," said Associate Professor David Paton, Head of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. "The current proposal of producing a new authority is great, but the timeline for delivering and the timelines for actually taking action are two to three years away still. "That is going to be too long to save components, particularly the southern parts of the Murray River systems," he said.

New motorcycle parking spaces

Adelaide City Council advises that more than 100 new motorcycle parking spaces have been installed on Frome Road, Victoria Drive and Kintore Avenue for staff and student use. This upgrade is in response to public demand for more on-street parking spaces for motorcycles and scooters, with particular attention given to identifying suitable locations near the University campus.

Official name for the University of Adelaide Online Community

The Development and Alumni office of the University of Adelaide is replacing its existing alumni database with a fully integrated Online Community in 2008.

We are pleased to announce the official name of our Community - Adelaide onLION.

The inspiration behind the name is the Bonython Hall lion, an icon of the University's tradition and 134-year heritage. Together with the name Adelaide onLION, the lion graphic will be a unique identifying symbol, giving the community a distinctive look and instant familiarity. Early in the implementation process, it was determined that our Online Community required a name that remained consistent with the strong branding of the University, but would give the Community its own identity.

As we countdown to the launch of this new and exciting way of engaging alumni, you can keep in touch with the latest information at: www.adelaide.edu.au/alumni/community/.

30,000th student visit to Maths Drop-In Centre

On Friday 14 March the Maths Drop-In Centre recorded its 30,000th visit since opening in June 1993.

Increased entry flexibility and expansion of International student numbers has progressively increased demand for numeracy and transition support (especially in the first four weeks of the academic year) and 2008 was the second busiest start to an academic year at the Centre ever.

The Maths Drop-In Centre recorded its 10,000th visit after six years of operation in August 1998, its 20,000th five years later and the last 10,000 have come in only four and a half years.

The Waite Precinct Volunteer Program
Farewell and Welcome

A Farewell Function attended by over one hundred guests was held in December 2007 to pay tribute to Yvonne Routledge and Peggy Rowe. Professor Malcolm Oades (former Director of the Waite Institute and Dean of the Faculty), the Hon Martin Hamilton-Smith and Dr Jennifer Gardner (Director of Waite Arboretum) reflected on the extensive and excellent contribution made by Yvonne and Peggy to the rejuvenation of Urrbrae House and its associated activities over the past 17 years. Mrs Lindsay McWha (Patron of the Volunteer Program of the University of Adelaide) also acknowledged their considerable contribution to the University's Volunteer Program and made a presentation on behalf of the Volunteers Committee.

Lynette Zeitz is the new Manager of the Urrbrae House Historic Precinct. Lynette is a graduate of the University and holds a Master of Arts Degree in History. Her first connection with the Waite Campus was in 1988 when she was appointed as the Faculty Registrar of the then Faculty of Agricultural Science. From 2002-2005 she worked as the Executive Officer (Research) in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

Amanda Jackson is the new Coordinator of Urrbrae House. Amanda has worked for Robin Graham and his Plant Nutrition research group at the Waite Campus. She has a great interest in Museum work, and Urrbrae House seems like a natural extension.

  • Transition to retirement - a government initiative that lets you take some of your super in the form of a pension (that you cannot cash in) without having to retire or finish work.
  • How you can remain in full-time employment, commence a transition to retirement pension and salary sacrifice the excess income back into super.

You'll discover the impact that these approaches may have on your retirement planning, retirement lifestyle, and final benefit.
