Drought 'killing Anzac trees'
Drought, water restrictions and failing community memory are undermining an Anzac legacy - the loss of thousands of trees planted across Australia to honour those who served their country. University of Adelaide PhD student Sarah Cockerell said more than half of the Avenues of Honour still standing were in Victoria but many had been lost because of poor management, urbanisation and natural causes. "The few that remain in good condition form valuable heritage landscapes, with local and national significance," Ms Cockerell said. The role of the community was crucial to ensuring the Avenues of Honour survived as long-lasting memorials.

University to host major student conference
In July 2008, the University of Adelaide will host the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC) - the largest internationally-focused student conference in Australia, and the largest model UN conference in the Asia-Pacific region.
AMUNC, 6-11 July, provides a platform for tertiary students to discuss global issues, engage in intellectual discourse and cultural exchange, and garner a unique perspective of world politics. It is expected to be a memorable, educational and exciting event that will have a strong impact on participants, many of whom are likely to be the leaders of tomorrow.
The Vice-Chancellor & President has endorsed the objectives of the conference and the efforts of the organising team and urges all areas within the University to help in any way they can to provide a welcoming environment for all delegates.
This support might include:
- Provision of delegate scholarships at a School level
- Free access to on-campus spaces and equipment
- Provision of University merchandise, such as pens and note pads
- Donations to offset printing costs
- Cooperation on a logistical level.

Safety when Leaving Campus
The Safe Steps campaign being held this week aims to make you aware of the potential dangers of walking alone when leaving the campus and encourages you to take actions to ensure you travel safely to your car, bus, train or taxi. Flyers will be distributed on campus this week providing basic safety advice and the Security Service contact numbers.
Follow these Safe Steps at all times:
- Follow the most open and well-lit public path.
- Whenever possible, walk with a friend or in a group or contact Security to arrange an escort if you are walking alone after dusk.
- If alone, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings - confidence deters attackers.
- Carry a personal alarm or whistle and be prepared to call for help.
- Avoid undergrowth and be wary of strangers.
- Move your car closer to buildings during the day if you are planning on staying on campus after dark.
- Do not wear earpieces/headphones when walking at night.

Escort Service
If you have to walk to a parked car or near-campus residence after dark where no alternative means of secure transport is available and you have concerns for your safety please contact your Security Service's after-dark Security Escort Service. Please call the Service well before you need to leave the building to arrange a time and place to meet.
Shuttle Bus service (North Terrace)
During term, an air-conditioned Shuttle Bus service runs hourly from the Security Office in Hughes Plaza between 5:15pm & 10:15pm to take students and staff up to 2.5kms from the University. A map of the bus route is located in the North Terrace Security Office.

30,000th student visit to Maths Drop-In Centre
On Friday 14 March the Maths Drop-In Centre recorded its 30,000th visit since opening in June 1993.
Increased entry flexibility and expansion of International student numbers has progressively increased demand for numeracy and transition support (especially in the first four weeks of the academic year) and 2008 was the second busiest start to an academic year at the Centre ever.
The Maths Drop-In Centre recorded its 10,000th visit after six years of operation in August 1998, its 20,000th five years later and the last 10,000 have come in only four and a half years.
New Faces at Adelaide Research & Innovation
ARI would like to welcome two new staff to the business, Greg Macpherson, Manager Contract Research, and Justin Dibbens, Commercial Development Manager, Health Sciences.
Justin brings to the team a wealth of experience and expertise, most recently as a patent attorney for Philips Ormonde and Fitzpatrick following holding a position as Visiting Fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, and a Fricker Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Hanson Centre for Cancer Research. Justin has been responsible for the drafting of many of ARI's patents in the Health Sciences portfolio so he is intimately familiar with the technology portfolio and already knows many of the researchers in the Faculty. Justin joins Matthew Chong and Lara Commane, ARI's commercial team for the Health Sciences portfolio. He will be taking over from Elaine Stead who is leaving on 23 May to take a position with CM Capital, a venture capital firm in Brisbane. This is a great opportunity for Elaine and we wish her all the best. She has made an outstanding contribution to ARI and the work of the Health Sciences Faculty, and will be sorely missed.
The Contract Research team has also expanded with the appointment of a new Manager, Greg Macpherson. Greg joins the team with a strong background in research commercialisation and marketing in a variety of industries including science, medical, IT, engineering and agriculture. His experience includes most recently with UniSA's technology transfer company, Itek, in a commercial development role, and prior to that with the Centre for Innovation, Business and Manufacturing; Playford Capital; Cambridge Lasers Ltd (UK); and Merck, a German pharmaceutical company. Greg's expertise in business expansion and growth strategies will be a real advantage to the Contract Services team with increasing commercial research activity at the University. His focus is on growing the contract research and consulting portfolio across all Faculties of the University.
Tony Hobbs 1956-2008
Jazz saxophonist, composer, educator and academic Tony Hobbs passed away on 22 April following a sudden heart attack. Tony was a unique individual who shared his musical passion with all willing to listen and touching many lives with his generous humour and love of music. His contribution educating many generations of jazz talent at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane State High School, and especially at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide, where he joined the part-time staff of the Elder Conservatorium as a lecturer in saxophone, leaves a wonderfully rich legacy for the Australian jazz community.
Tristram Cary OAM 1925-2008
Tristram Cary died on April 24, 2008 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, following complications arising from an operation. Dr Cary was internationally recognised as one of the founders of electronic music and a source of inspiration for subsequent generations of musicians working in what has become one of the most important fields of contemporary music. His influence on music was global. Cary was born and educated in the UK, and from the mid 1950s worked full time as a professional composer. His first movie score was for the Ealing comedy The Ladykillers (1955), and he attained lasting fame as the composer of the 'Dalek' theme from the BBC series Dr Who. He founded the electronic music studio at the Royal College of Music in 1967 before emigrating to Adelaide in 1974, where he directed the Electronic Music Studio at the Elder Conservatorium, turning it into the leading facility of its kind in Australia. He retired in 1986, but has remained associated with the University as an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow, composing and publishing widely, and taking the degree of Doctor of Music in 2001. His many awards and honours included an OAM for services to music in 1991, and the Adelaide Critics Circle Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Carmel Bird is an Australian novelist, short story writer and literary editor. Her most recent fiction is the collection, The Essential Bird (2006) and the novel, Cape Grimm (2005).
She has also assisted creative writing in Australia with her books, Writing the Story of Your Life (2008) and Dear Writer (1998).

Ballets Russes Symposium, 23 - 25 May 2008
The University of Adelaide is hosting a major symposium as part of the four-year project Ballets Russes in Australia: Our Cultural Revolution. Coinciding with The Australian Ballet's French Connections season, this weekend symposium has been designed as a series of presentations and panel discussions by international experts and leading Australian artists involved in the creation of ballet.
