Super fund backs uni research
The Trans Tasman Commercialisation Fund is set up to support university research projects in the early stages of commercialisation. The fund is a joint venture among the University of Adelaide, Monash, Flinders, UniSA and University of Auckland, NZ and state governments and industry superannuation fund Westscheme, which is investing $30 million over five years. University research teams will be able to bid for up to $1 million. Robert Chalmers, Managing Director of Adelaide Research and Innovation, has several ideas to pitch to the fund's managers — these are projects involving new forms of antibiotics and therapeutics for drug-resistant bacteria. "We're also quite excited by some of the opportunities emerging in the physical sciences areas that might have a mining resource or defence application," Mr Chalmers said.

Cultural Conversation - Reintroducing the First Vice-Chancellors
Date/Time: Wednesday 25 June 2008, 4:00-6:00pm
Venue: Edgeloe Room, Mitchell Building
FREE. All welcome.
Art & Heritage Collections of the University of Adelaide present a special Conversation and exhibition of rediscovered photographic portraits. Professor James McWha, Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Adelaide, will launch the new display and Dr Barbara Kidman, past University staff member and presently a volunteer specialist on University history will tell us about the early days — the Vice-Chancellors who contributed to the growth and prominence of the University of Adelaide. The University has a long tradition of portraiture of key office holders. Chancellors' portraits are on display in Bonython Hall, while Vice-Chancellors' are on display in the Mitchell Building. This new exhibition includes only Vice-Chancellors who were not also Chancellors and therefore do not have a portrait in Bonython Hall. The exhibition and associated research will add significantly to our understanding of the University's early history.

Cultural Celebration - Exhibition and Painting Demonstration presented by artists from APY Lands
Date/Time: Thursday 26 June 2008, 12:00noon-2:00pm
Venue: Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library
FREE. All welcome.
Art & Heritage Collections of the University of Adelaide and Better World Arts Cross Cultural Projects invite you to attend an exhibition and painting demonstration presented by artists from Anangu Pitjantjatara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. To start the Celebration the artists will present an inma, a celebration of the earth and land, with song and dance. The artists, and Carolyn Wilson, Director of Better World Arts, will lead us through the event. In response to the overwhelming success of their exhibition held at the University in 2006 we are again delighted to welcome the artists from APY Lands who work in the Better World Arts Studio. The exhibition showcases paintings, basketry and cross-cultural items. These artists work in a cross cultural context, connecting with communities in Kashmir and Peru. Through these networks they produce a range of products from rugs and lacquer boxes to jewellery. All products are based on the original designs by the APY artists. They are also developing an education program to be presented in schools and we shall be privileged to have a sneak preview of that program on the day, sharing with us the way in which they create their paintings.

Some pathways toward a more sustainable energy future

Venue: G04, Napier Building
FREE public lecture.
As Deputy Director of RIsCCS, Gus seeks to establish partnerships with industry and government to adopt multi-disciplinary approaches to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Synopsis: There is growing consensus of the need to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, both in South Australia and the rest of the world. However there are many perspectives as to which technology options to pursue toward this goal, given our present heavy reliance on fossil fuels and substantial investment in capital intensive plant to utilise them.
The lecture will assess some of the challenges and opportunities emerging to this end, both locally and internationally, as we seek to manage the transition to a more sustainable future.
