Uni in the News
Adelaide professor says climate change is unavoidable but that humans are not the cause of it.
University of Adelaide Professor of Mining Geology Ian Plimer this week launches his seventh book, Heaven and Earth, Global Warming: The Missing Science, which aims to refute every scientific argument that humans are responsible for global warming.
Professor Plimer embarked on the project after being incensed by increasing public acceptance of the idea that humans have caused global warming. Many scientists worldwide agree that high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have caused global temperatures to rise. Professor Plimer said his book would "knock out every single argument we hear about climate change", to prove that global warming is a cycle of the Earth. "It’s got nothing to do with the atmosphere, it’s about what happens in the galaxy. "You’ve got to look at the whole solar system and, most importantly, we look back in time.
"There’s a lot of talk out there that there isn’t any science that supports my view, but I have 2111 scientific references in this book." Professor Plimer has been awarded two Eureka prizes, for science promotion and best science book, and a Centenary Medal for his geological contribution to Australian society.
He said the planet has endured constant climate change and rapid changes had occurred in the past. "Not one has been driven by carbon dioxide," he said. The book outlines how climate is driven by the sun, the Earth's orbit and plate tectonics.
It will be released in Britain and U.S. after its Australian launch.

The Prime Minister's Prizes for Science
These awards are the most prestigious and significant of their kind in Australia, and recognise excellence in science and science teaching. Recipients of the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science share in grants totalling $500,000 from the Australian Government.
Nominations to the 2009 Prizes close on 8 May 2009, 5:00pm AEST and nominators are encouraged to finalise and submit their nominations as soon as possible.
The five award categories include:
- The Prime Minister's Prize for Science
- The Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year
- The Science Minister's Prize for Life Scientist of the Year
- The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Primary Schools
- The Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools.
Australian citizens or those who hold permanent residence status in Australia are eligible for these awards. Nominations should be made by nominators who are personally knowledgeable of the nominee’s achievements and who can offer expert opinion on as to their worth. Self nominations will not be considered.

Delegations of Authority
The University of Adelaide Act 1971 specifically assigns to the Vice-Chancellor and President responsibility "for the academic standards, management and administration of the University". In exercising this responsibility, the Vice-Chancellor and President is empowered, by virtue of office, to make the decisions and approvals necessary to deliver the objectives of the University. As a consequence, the Vice-Chancellor and President must, in order to carry out these responsibilities, delegate a range of authorities to the University's senior managers and the staff who report to them.

Call for Applications for Academic Promotion to Level D
Staff and titleholders wishing to apply for promotion to Level D are now invited to submit their applications.
Promotion is an important way that the University of Adelaide recognizes outstanding performance. We would encourage all staff who believe they meet the relevant promotion criteria to submit an application in 2009.
If you require assistance in determining eligibility, it is suggested you discuss your potential application with your Head of School or Head of Discipline.
A workshop has been scheduled to assist Level D and Level E applicants on Friday 22nd May, 12:30pm - 2:30pm, Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library.
The full details of this workshop will be advertised in Inside Adelaide and the HR website closer to the time.
Applicants should refer to the Policy, Guidelines and Toolkit, and the appropriate Position Classification Standards when preparing their application.
An application should be made on the approved application form and ONE full printed copy submitted to Lucy Maynard Manager, Recruitment Services by the deadline of Friday 5th June 2009.
No supplementary information will be accepted from applicants after the closing date for applications, unless requested by the University.

'Does Honours have a future? A discussion of the relative merits of Honours and Masters programs as a route to developing research professionals'
Presented by Dr Douglas Bardsley, Geographical and Environmental Studies
The presentation will explore the role that the Honours degree is playing within the Geographical & Environmental Studies Discipline, in the context of rapidly changing academic and societal demands. The function of Honours to bridge the gap between undergraduate studies and postgraduate research is reviewed, as are some significant challenges faced both within the discipline and more broadly across Australia. This is a presentation of a research project undertaken for the Exploring Supervision Program.

In addition, completion of the full module of the program leads to registration as a principal HDR supervisor.

Create interactive online course materials
We now have a campus wide license for Wimba Create that enables you to quickly and easily create new materials or convert your Microsoft Word documents into content for your online courses. From one Word document you can generate a set of webpages that include navigation and interactive features that are easily uploaded in to your MyUni course.

The Power of Voice: Do you learn aurally?
How important is learning by hearing to your students? The University has recently added the use of the voice to MyUni, the University’s learning management system. Teachers and facilitators can now create and manage such things as audio discussion boards, send audio supported emails, insert audio messages and create powerful audio narrated presentations which are able to easily record knowledge-building feedback from students - all from within their courses.
The CLPD will be running a one hour information session introducing the Wimba Voice suite of tools.

Certificate IV in TESOL
If you are looking to teach English as a second language in Australia or overseas and wish to gain a qualification in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), then this practical program is for you. The program is accredited as a Certificate IV within Australia and provides the minimum qualification required to teach ESOL. It provides essential training in the usage of communicative methodologies in teaching adult learners, including lesson planning and classroom practice. This program combines face-to-face delivery, self-study and group work. Participants will observe experienced ESOL teachers and participate in teaching practice with ESOL learners at various levels.

PCE, through the English Language Centre, offers a 10 week part time course English for Professionals, designed for people from non-English speaking backgrounds who want a successful professional career in Australia. They may be a skilled migrant, a current or past overseas student or working as a professional. The course further develops general language proficiency and focuses on the skills and strategies required to advance in an Australian professional career.
The next course commences: 18 August, 2009
Classes are held on Saturdays 10:00am - 2:30pm and two evenings, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm - 9:30pm each week.

Intellectual Property & Commercialisation - Module 4
A comprehensive introduction to IP and commercialisation. At the completion of this module you should have developed an understanding of the process, which will enable you to participate in your university's research commercialisation.
The Future Research Leaders program has been developed collaboratively by the Go8 universities, and is delivered in full each semester for the benefit of the research community of the University of Adelaide. The program is aimed at current and aspiring research leaders, and seeks to build a range of skills and knowledge critical to successful research leadership and management.
There are eight modules in the program, together with a researcher orientation module. Modules are undertaken by a combination of online study, independent research and a face-to-face workshop. Do just one module, or do as many as you like. “It’s up to you. And it’s all free!”

Exploring Supervision #2 - Research communication in the multicultural academy
Drawing on frameworks from cross-cultural communication studies, this workshop asks supervisors to respond to the key communicative and cultural challenges arising from the internationalisation of the research community, and focusing in particular on the supervision of students from differing linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Various policies, resources and strategies will be presented, and tested against case studies.
Come along prepared to discuss your own experiences of working in different cultural and linguistic contexts, and what lessons you have learned about how to cope, or perhaps even thrive, in those situations.
