Uni in the News

Call to double university intakes from among 'working class'

Schools and bureaucrats have to change their attitude that it is "too hard" to entice more students to aim for university - especially when it comes to students from "working class" backgrounds. Speaking at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia lunch, university leaders said South Australia will have to work hard to lift the proportion of the population with a tertiary education — to meet the national target of 40 per cent of 25-34 year-olds with a degree by 2025. Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley AC, whose Review of Australian Higher Education is the basis of Government reforms detailed in the Budget, said attitudes needed to change for targets to be met. While the universities do run mentoring programs in schools, University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor James McWha said a priority was to encourage more students to finish Year 12. "Universities will have to work hard to ensure there are multiple pathways into the universities. The one traditional path is yesterday's way of doing it," he said.

General Information for Staff

Snoring in kids: A not-so-silent problem?

Overseas estimates claim snoring is common, affecting around 10% of children, and may be linked to a child's daytime performance and behaviour. However, little is known about snoring in Australian children. The University of Adelaide's Sleep Research Group is conducting a study looking at snoring in children and would therefore like to hear from parents of children aged 5-10 years who snore regularly. The study involves an overnight sleep study at the Women's and Children's Hospital Sleep Disorders Unit, and on a separate day, assessments of IQ, memory, learning and behaviour. We will assess snoring and behaviour once a year for two years, to determine whether snoring persists and may be causing any performance or behavioural problems. This research is led by Dr Cameron van den Heuvel in the newly formed Children's Research Centre.

If you would like to help this research, which may lead to better health management of an estimated quarter of a million children in Australia, please phone 8161 6456 and leave a message, or email: sleep.studies@adelaide.edu.au. We would be happy to hear from you or from families you know who are aware of snoring in their children. Thank you for helping this important University of Adelaide research.

Research Tuesdays

Stargazing with eyes wide shut
How distant celestial radiation is giving us a whole new perspective on the universe - and our own backyards

Presented by Professor Roger Clay, Discipline of Physics.

Date/Time: Tuesday 9 June 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Napier 102 Lecture Theatre, Napier Building, University of Adelaide
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: Since 1992, the University of Adelaide has been part of a major international project that is changing the way we "see" the universe.

Located in Argentina, the Pierre Auger Observatory is exclusively observing celestial radiation containing particles up to 100,000,000 times more energetic than any created by man.

In doing so it's producing a remarkable first view of the universe that is not based on the observation of light, and providing valuable insights into radiation's role in heating our environment right here in SA.

Auger Data was recognised in 2007 as one of the 3 most important results in any scientific field worldwide. In this "illuminating" presentation Professor Roger Clay shows why.

Now all Adelaide OnLion members can register online - visit: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysjune to secure your seat!

Field Geology Club of SA, the Royal Society of SA & the Geological Society of Australia (SA Branch) lecture

How Green were our Deserts?
By Professor Gerald C. Nanson, GeoQUEST Research Centre, University of Wollongong

Australia has a remarkable history of climate change recorded in its dunes, lakes and rivers. During past times much wetter conditions prevailed in the now arid heart of the continent and sustained a complex ecosystem including very large animals. When was it wet - and how wet? When did we dry out - and why? This lecture will describe some of the major climatic changes that have taken place in our island continent during the past - and discuss what the future might hold.

Date/Time: Thursday 11 June 2009, 7:00pm
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Laboratories (near corner of Victoria Drive and Frome Road)

Visitors are warmly invited to attend, but please be punctual. For further details contact Frances Williams on 0403 153 726 or Paul Curnow on 0402 079 578.
