Numbers add up for Tao
Regarded as one of the world's top maths minds, UCLA's Professor Terence Tao will deliver a FREE lecture at the University of Adelaide as part of the Clay-Mahler Public Lecture series. The 2006 Fields Medallist, who lived in Adelaide, received his Masters degree from Flinders at 17 and became a University of California professor at 24. Colleagues in mathematics say he has already made breakthroughs in harmonic analysis and number theory which has applications to cryptology, security of information and computer science. He will present "The proof of the Poincaré conjecture" - understanding the geometry of three-dimensional objects. The School of Mathematical Sciences hosts this lecture on Friday 25 September 2009, 3:10pm - 4:00pm, in Napier 102 Lecture Theatre, North Terrace Campus.

Review of the School of Education in the Faculty of the Professions
The University is currently undertaking a review of the School of Education in the Faculty of the Professions. Staff, students and members of the University community are invited to make a submission to the review on matters relevant to the Terms of Reference, which are available on the Quality and Reviews website at: www.adelaide.edu.au/pvclq/reviews/current/. The deadline for submissions is 5:00pm, Monday 6 July 2009. All submissions remain confidential. Submissions can be sent via email to: qualityandreviews@adelaide.edu.au.

August 2009 Graduation Ceremonies: Invitation to attend
Staff (particularly academic staff) are invited and encouraged to attend the August 2009 graduation ceremonies. Five ceremonies will be held, two on Monday 3 August, two on Tuesday 4 August and one on Wednesday 5 August.
As a show of support for the graduating students, and to promote the desired community feel at such an important event, academic staff from each relevant faculty are invited to take part in the Academic Procession at each graduation ceremony.

Course Profile
During the formulation of the University's Performance Portfolio for the 2008 AUQA Audit, the variability in content and presentation of course-level information available to students was identified as a risk to the quality of the student experience. A Working Party comprising representatives from each of the faculties, CLPD and Student Services was established to develop a standard Course Profile template to provide relevant information in a consistent manner. The template was informed by the benchmarking of practice at other Australian universities as well as consideration of existing internal course-related handouts.
Feedback was obtained from the University community on the structure and
content of the draft template from late March - early April 2009. A number
of changes were made and the revised template and a summary of the Working Party's responses to the feedback are available at:

A pilot project is now underway to test the template with a range of undergraduate and postgraduate coursework courses to be offered in Semester 2 2009.
Draft Policy for Consultation
Responsible Conduct of Research Policy
This Policy formally adopts the principles embodied in the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research [the Code]. This Policy is predicated on the principle that researchers associated with the University are committed to high standards of professional conduct, and that they will ensure their work enhances the good name of the University and the profession to which they belong. Like the Code it adopts, the Policy simply formalises principles that naturally flow from such a commitment to excellence.

Construction works for Glenelg to Adelaide Park Lands Recycled Water Project
Traffic and parking restrictions along Victoria Drive from 22 June to 24 July:
From Monday 22 June 2009 until approximately 24 July 2009, the CityGreen Alliance will be undertaking open trenching pipe installation works through and adjacent to Victoria Drive.
Stage one from 22/6/09 to 26/6/09 will involve traffic and parking restrictions between King William Road and Kintore Avenue. Parking on both the north and south side of Victoria Drive will be restricted during this time.
Stage two from 29/6/09 to 10/7/09 will involve traffic and parking restrictions from around 40m east of Kintore Avenue to approximately 80m west of Frome Road.
Stage three from 20/7/09 to 24/7/09 will involve traffic and parking restrictions on the northern side of Victoria Drive for 70m west of Frome Road.
Two-way traffic will be maintained along Victoria Drive at significantly reduced levels with delays resulting from speed restrictions and temporary traffic light controls.

Change in Contracted Cleaning Services
The University's contract for the provision of cleaning, caretaking and support services is due to expire on 30 June 2009.
Infrastructure Branch (Property and Technology) is pleased to advise that, following a recently completed comprehensive procurement process, Spotless Services Australia Limited has been selected and engaged to provide the cleaning, caretaking and support services across the University property portfolio from 1 July 2009.
Campus Services is working with Spotless Services to ensure a seamless as possible transition from the current to the proposed arrangements.
If you experience any difficulties or require any assistance relating to changed arrangements for cleaning, caretaking or support services please contact either, Mr Steve Mylius, Campus Services Support Manager on ext 35879 or Ms Pat Vaitiekus, Campus Services Cleaning Co-ordinator on mobile 0420 958 773.

University launches new IT Governance Framework
The University has taken a major step towards achieving its exciting and challenging Digital Futures strategy with the implementation of a revised IT Governance Framework based on best practice. The new framework places great importance on communication and engagement with the University community and will ensure that staff and students have a leading role in formulating IT strategy and investment. It embodies three new University committees replacing the Executive Steering Committee for IT (ESCIT) and the IT Facilitation Committee. Membership of these committees reflects the highest level of University commitment to IT governance. Altered States of Consciousness - First Time Out 2009

First Time Out is an experimental writing and theatre project designed to explore the liminal space between a piece of writing and its interpretation. It is about the common ground between two forms of storytelling and the chance to explore the boundaries of each.
Following on from the success of last year's page #1, Scene#1 ... the end and other stories in 2008, we present another selection of writings that in many cases were not written for the realm of theatre but with the intention of exploring the medium of writing, the words on a page. This year's presentation, which we have named Altered States of Consciousness, is about taking the essence of those stories, those words, and finding a meaning in them that can transcend the page and live on the stage.
Director Michael Allen said: "The process is one of essential theatre making, where actors explore a text and develop staged retellings. It will hopefully culminate in an engaging night at the theatre that stimulates the imagination of the audience as much as the original pieces of writing have stimulated my imagination from the page".

Mawson's Exhibition Now Open until 18 October 2009
Quest for the South Magnetic Pole
The University of Adelaide has signed a sponsorship partnership with the Maritime Museum on their latest exhibition Quest for the South Magnetic Pole in which our former alumni Sir Douglas Mawson was one of the key players. The University of Adelaide served as the base for Mawson's expeditions and his long academic career. Mawson had leading roles in Antarctic expeditions in 1908, 1911-14 and 1929-31.
He joined the University in 1905 and remained until his retirement in 1952 when he was made Emeritus Professor.

Connecting the Dots: Recognising and Responding to Legal and Risk Issues in your everday work
This workshop explores legal compliance, contracts, risk management... what do they all mean to those of us working in the University, and how are they interconnected?
The session will be presented simply and relevantly (no Law degree required!), with everyday examples tailored to the University environment. You will walk away more confident about legal and risk issues, and armed with some basic everyday tools for dealing with them in a common sense way.
Audience: Managers and staff wanting to know how to spot and handle legal and risk issues.

Building Resilience
This two part workshop is designed to build personal resilience. Staff who are emotionally resilient are more likely to: (1) manage stress and communicate better, (2) be optimistic and confident, and (3) bounce back when faced with hardship or difficulty. ERGA Conference 2009: Feedback and Flexible Learning

The 2009 ERGA conference will be addressing the theme of Feedback and Flexible Learning. The aim of the ERGA Conference series is to bring together colleagues from the higher education sector to discuss best practice and new approaches in the tertiary environment.
Our keynote speakers this year will be Professor Marcia Devlin, Chair in Higher Education Research, Deakin University, and Professor Susan Jones, Head of Zoology, University of Tasmania.
