General Information for Staff
Electronic Recycling Week
North Terrace and Waite Campuses
21 - 25 September 2009
The University's first eRecycling Week will run from Monday 21 September until Friday 25 September, 2009.
Anything with a cord or battery can be recycled - our aim is to safely divert the University's electronic waste from landfill and to recycle it.
Safely disposing of e-waste is healthier for the environment and preserves our natural resources while decreasing pollution caused by the leaching of toxic materials. Join us in being proactive about eRecycling – Australia is one of only a few developed countries that allows e-waste to be dumped into landfill, and the University is running eRecycling Week as a vital part of its Environmental Management program.
To get involved, speak to your School Manager or contact Mathew Jeffrey, Environmental Projects Officer.
Further information about the benefits of eRecycling and details about what can be recycled are on the eRecycling website.

Art & Heritage Collections Volunteer Group
On Tuesday 18 August the Art & Heritage Collections Volunteer Group celebrated its First Anniversary. To mark this special occasion we were joined in the Glaessner Room for afternoon tea and a tour of the Tate Museum by the Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor James McWha and by the University of Adelaide's Patron of Volunteers, Mrs Lindsay McWha.
The A&H Collections Volunteers are currently undertaking a major project in the Mawson Building cataloguing the historical teaching tool and various geological and palaeontological collections from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Invitation to participate in strategy in prevention of child abuse & neglect
An important initiative we are supporting over the next two months is the National Attitudinal Survey, an innovative community project designed to gauge Australia's attitudes on issues of child abuse and neglect.
Led by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) and supported by the Federal Government and universities, the short 15-minute survey will bring together Australia's public sector, business, communities and individuals to form one voice against child abuse and neglect.
Consider this:
- Over 30,000 children are abused or neglected in Australia every year.
- 1 in 3 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18.
- 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.
How can you act right now? By logging on now to:
http://preventingchildabuse.com.au
We hope you choose to support this vital survey.
Thank you

The Ethics of Marketing

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 October 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus

Synopsis: If television's The Gruen Transfer, Choice magazine and the endless flow of on-line complaints are anything to go by, the marketing world is rife with unethical behaviour.
Indeed, a growing global body of research into corporate responsibility is revealing a deep undercurrent of public distrust. So how have we reached this point and, most importantly, can it change?
In this controversial presentation, University of Adelaide marketing and consumer behaviour expert Professor Pascale Quester will dissect the many ethical dilemmas faced by marketers on a daily basis.
She will also offer a variety of perspectives that could improve the morality of their decisions, and discuss the critical role to be played by "ethical consumers".

Presented by Professor Turner B. Sutton, North Carolina State University (USA)
Date/Time: Friday 25 September 2009, 10:00am

Synopsis: Many temperate fruit crops are now grown in the warmer temperate and subtropical regions of the world. These regions are warmer, and in many cases wetter than traditional production regions. In the warmer temperate and subtropical regions, the disease complex tends to be much more diverse and many diseases are more severe than in temperate regions. Downy mildew and bitter rot of grapes and Glomerella leaf spot of apples will be used to illustrate differences in their epidemiology between regions and how it affects the management strategies used. Professor Sutton will discuss the relative importance of disease management strategies and how disease management varies among moist cool temperate, moist warm temperate, dry temperate and subtropical regions.
The 2nd Bob Symons Lecture is named in honour of the former Emeritus Professor in Plant Science at the Waite, Professor Robert Henry Symons (1934-2006).
