Young Investigator Award
PhD student Alison Care from the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been named the winner of the 2009 Young Investigator Award. Alison Care hopes her research in mice will help improve knowledge of the role played by the immune system in miscarriage. Her research has focused on the role of macrophages (white blood cells) within the ovary. She won the Young Investigator Award after presenting her research to a general audience and media panel at the Final on Thursday 15 October at the Royal Institution of Australia. Ms Care receives The Hon Carolyn Pickles Award of $10,000 which is offered by the Children, Youth and Women's Health Service and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide. Prizes of $3,000 each were awarded to the two runners up, Kathryn Gebhardt (also from Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and Roger Yazbek from the Children, Youth and Women's Health Service (CYWHS).

FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: "Alternative Medicines" have never had a popularity problem. They're currently used by almost half of all Australian households to treat a vast array of ailments.
But credibility has been in short supply, with robust scientific rationales and evidence of effectiveness typically conspicuous in their absence.
New research at the University of Adelaide, however, is going some way to changing that. A large number of naturally sourced agents known as "bioactives" have been shown to have the potential to improve or, in some cases, supersede conventional pharmaceutical drug therapies for diseases and disorders of the bowel.
In this fascinating presentation, research leader Associate Professor Gordon Howarth will explain how and explore the exciting implications.

"Power is the great aphrodisiac" - Henry Kissinger
"I don't want revenge. I want understanding" - Carol, Oleanna
John is a University Lecturer on the brink of achieving tenure. Carol, a failing student, comes to his office to discuss her poor class performance.
Midway through the play, depending on one's point of view, an act of sexual harassment does or does not occur. A bitter battle for power ensues between two dogmatic individuals whose inability to communicate and whose use and abuse of jargon and political correctness threatens to undermine basic issues of freedom of thought.
David Mamet's Oleanna is a savagely ironic play that explores the inadequacies of the University education system, portrays the delicate boundaries that exist between teacher and student, and brutally charts a relationship that degenerates before the audiences' eyes.
But what actually happens in this see-saw of power? Is it male predatory harassment? Rampaging feminist propaganda? Or something else entirely?
Cast: Brant Eustice as John and Rachael Grauwelman-Smith as Carol.
