Students rock along in true Star Wars style
Inspired by the Star Wars movies, Mechanical Engineering Honours students at the University of Adelaide have designed a new vehicle that can be controlled by the rocking motion of the driver. The idea came from exotic vehicles such as the Wheelbike (monowheel) and Hailfire Droid (diwheel), supervisor Associate Professor Ben Cazzolato, said. "It's just a fun toy but the skills that the students learn are applicable for the control of any vehicle," he said. The Electric DiWheel with active rotation damping was one of 50 student inventions on display at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds for the 15th Annual Honours Student Project Exhibition.

Should you choose to advertise roles in December please ensure all advertising cut off dates reflect your ability to respond to candidates in a timely manner, i.e. if you are unable to respond to candidates until the beginning of January we would advise that the cut off date of your position reflects this date to manage candidate expectations relating to their acknowledgement.

Research Tuesdays
Easier Pills to Swallow
Natural digestive system medicines are emerging with a previously elusive ingredient - evidence
Presenter: Associate Professor Gordon Howarth is a Cancer Council Australia Senior Research Fellow and leads the University of Adelaide's Digestive Health Research Group. He is also an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Gastroenterology Department of the Women's and Children's Hospital.
Date/Time: Tuesday 10 November 2009, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: "Alternative Medicines" have never had a popularity problem. They're currently used by almost half of all Australian households to treat a vast array of ailments.
But credibility has been in short supply, with robust scientific rationales and evidence of effectiveness typically conspicuous in their absence.
New research at the University of Adelaide, however, is going some way to changing that. A large number of naturally sourced agents known as "bioactives" have been shown to have the potential to improve or, in some cases, supersede conventional pharmaceutical drug therapies for diseases and disorders of the bowel.
In this fascinating presentation, research leader Associate Professor Gordon Howarth will explain how and explore the exciting implications.

"Power is the great aphrodisiac" - Henry Kissinger
"I don't want revenge. I want understanding" - Carol, Oleanna
John is a University Lecturer on the brink of achieving tenure. Carol, a failing student, comes to his office to discuss her poor class performance.
Midway through the play, depending on one's point of view, an act of sexual harassment does or does not occur. A bitter battle for power ensues between two dogmatic individuals whose inability to communicate and whose use and abuse of jargon and political correctness threatens to undermine basic issues of freedom of thought.
David Mamet's Oleanna is a savagely ironic play that explores the inadequacies of the University education system, portrays the delicate boundaries that exist between teacher and student, and brutally charts a relationship that degenerates before the audiences' eyes.
But what actually happens in this see-saw of power? Is it male predatory harassment? Rampaging feminist propaganda? Or something else entirely?
Cast: Brant Eustice as John and Rachael Grauwelman-Smith as Carol.
