Folic acid taken during late pregnancy increases chance of asthma in children, claims study

Babies born to women who took folic acid late in pregnancy may be more likely to develop asthma, it was claimed yesterday. A study found a 30 per cent increased risk for children whose mothers took supplements of the vitamin between weeks 30 and 34 of their pregnancy.

Experts at the University of Adelaide studied 557 expectant mothers and how many of their children had asthma at 3.5 years and 5.5 years. The findings showed a link with folic acid taken in later pregnancy, but no association with it taken in early pregnancy.

The Development of the Electric Car

Presented by the History of Science, Ideas & Technology Group.
Speaker: Jeff Pickett
Date/Time: Monday 9 November 2009, 7:00pm
Venue: Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith Library
Supper: $2 gold coin donation.
Visitors welcome.

The electric car in many of its forms has been much in the news in the last year. This illustrated lecture will trace the story of the electric car from the first forms of electric propulsion, the hey-day period from 1895 to 1910 (when one third of US cars sold in 1900 were electric) through to the latest electric sports cars. While production fell in the 1920s, there was resurgence in electric vehicle production when petrol was scarce in the Second World War and again when oil prices increased in the 1970s.

Despite the US Government's Federal Clean Air Incentive Program of 1976 and the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate of 1990 (California), electric car development has been undermined by apathy, opposition and collusion on the part of vested interests right up to the present day.

This talk will also present an opportunity for examination of electric car development in recent years.

For further details contact Bob Major, Secretary on 8352 8949 or email: Dr Pauline Payne, President.
