South Australia 'heading for zero unemployment'
Demand for workers will outstrip supply from 2012, when one-third of South Australia's workforce reaches retirement age, new research reveals. But the demand will also provide a chance for South Australia to come close to eliminating unemployment. The state is expected to have 134,000 jobs up for grabs, both new work in mining and defence and vacancies created by a surge in retirements in the health, education, administration and service sectors. Baby boomers are expected to retire at the same time as older workers, who suffered recent superannuation losses and stayed in the workforce. Dr John Spoehr, from the University of Adelaide's Australian Institute for Social Research, said the surge in retirements would coincide with a period of strong economic growth and there would be significant skills shortages if this were not addressed now. "It's very important to start trying now and create more apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities," he said.

Australian Civic Trust - Awards announced
Research Project Wins Peak Civic Design Award
A landmark contract research project authored by Dr David Jones (Landscape Architecture) recently won the top award issued by the Trust.
The inaugural 'Colonel William Light Award for Contribution to Excellence in Urban Design' was awarded to the Adelaide Park Lands & Squares Cultural Landscape Assessment Study (2007), commissioned by the City of Adelaide Council, that provided key evidence for the recent inclusion of the Park Lands to the National Heritage List.
The project involved an exhaustive historical interrogation of the cultural evolution of the park lands and squares, and recommendations for future heritage management of these places. Included was a review of known Kaurna and European evidence of occupying, surveying, planting, and using the park lands including identification of the main influencers and their motivations.
The study has provided the Council with a major resource in which to better understand the evolution and structure of the park lands, and a major educational resource to the public, researchers and professional practitioners.
Community Engagement Course Wins Major Civic Design Award
The core course 'Design for Sustainable Communities III/IV', offered by the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Urban Design, recently won the inaugural 'Stuart Hart Award for City and Regional Planning' which recognises the major design, planning and community engagement role and contribution the course has made, and continues to make, in rural South Australia.
In 2009 the course used six communities on the Eyre Peninsula with the direct support of the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association and the Eyre Peninsula Natural Resource Management Board, receiving considerable plaudits from these organisations, local councils and host communities for the professionalism, insights and feasible visions offered by the students.
So successful was this venture, that the Association and Board has invited the course back to an additional six communities on the Peninsula to enable a robust and consistent vision of thought.
The course involves a deep immersion into the physical and social fabric of a rural community resulting in a rigorous exploration of sustainable design and planning using select rural communities as study venues. Included is a program of community engagement that directly informs and guides student learning and responses.

Guidelines on Access Privileges for HDR Students Outside Candidature -
For Consultation
"The Guidelines on Access Privileges for HDR Students Outside Candidature" are designed to replace the current "Access Privileges for Postgraduate Students Outside their Candidature Policy" - http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/65/. The guidelines will provide information on existing access practices and procedures for pre- and post-candidature HDR students, and provide direction for HDR students and responsible staff, primarily Heads of School and Postgraduate Coordinators. The guidelines will be incorporated into the Research Student Handbook and made available via the Adelaide Graduate Centre website.
The draft Guidelines are available for consultation at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/drafts/.
The consultation period ends on Thursday 17 December 2009.

New Student Grievance Resolution Process
On 29 October 2009, the Vice-Chancellor and President revoked the Student Complaints Policy and the Fair Treatment Procedures for Students, and approved the new Student Grievance Resolution Process. This was in response to the need to make the grievance process for students easier to understand and follow. The process explains the stages that need to be followed in order to resolve a grievance concerning an academic decision, administrative decision, or unfair treatment that has occurred at the University.
The Student Grievance Resolution Process is now on the Student Policy & Appeals website at: www.adelaide.edu.au/student/grievance/.
The following five policies have been amended and now include reference to the new Student Grievance Resolution Process:
Unsatisfactory Academic Progress by Coursework Students Policy at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/1803/
Assessment for Coursework Programs Policy at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/700/
Plagiarism Policy at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/230/
Policy on Cheating in Examinations and Related Forms of Assessment at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/1963/
Reasonable Adjustments to Teaching & Assessment for Students with a Disability Policy at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/64/
The Fair Treatment Policy has a disclaimer which indicates that the Fair Treatment Procedures for Students have been replaced by the Student Grievance Resolution Process.
