Student delegate heading for Copenhagen
A student delegate to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen said the world must address the climate issue because the future of the planet is at stake.
Joel Dignam, 18, is the only South Australian member of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition delegation. He studies Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide with a focus on sustainable engineering.
Mr Dignam said the climate change debate had taken on new meaning in the wake of the global financial crisis with many arguing that action now would further hurt businesses already suffering.
"But we will be asking how can we afford not to address climate change," he said. The UN conference from 7 - 18 December offered the best chance of reaching a global agreement on climate change to benefit humanity.
Australia at Copenhagen is led by Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Australian Government Minister for Climate Change and Water, who is an Adelaide graduate.
