Extra uni offers answer call for job skills
The University of Adelaide has made a record number of offers - 5260 for places in its undergraduate programs for 2010. Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Academic), Professor Fred McDougall, said tertiary institutions were making a big effort to increase places to meet the nation's demand for skilled workers. "We've continued to expand our number of offers to make it consistent with the need for more people with university degrees. "It is important for the future of our state and country," Professor McDougall said. "At the University of Adelaide, we have experienced year-on-year growth in student numbers for more than a decade. Our number of offers for this year is up by more than 1000 since 2005 - a 26% increase. This is a phenomenal rate of growth and shows that we have a serious track record when it comes to providing access to a quality higher education," he said. Interest in the Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Science double degree has grown by 59 per cent for first preferences, while Bachelor of Nursing first-preference applications are up by 26%.

General Information for Staff
New Policy
On 7 January 2010, the Vice-Chancellor and President approved the new "Research Grants, Contracts and Consultancies Policy", available at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/122/.
This Policy applies to all University of Adelaide staff, on fixed-term and continuing appointments, who are involved in externally-funded research grants, contracts and consultancies. It also applies to non-staff affiliates and titleholders when undertaking activities within their University role, subject to any conditions of appointment.
Staff are encouraged to secure external research funding in support of their research and the University's strategic vision.
External funding includes research grants, contract research and consultancies, and is a critical part of the University's activity.
Funds from most research activity can be reported to the Commonwealth Government as part of the University's annual research income
return, thus generating infrastructure funding as well as providing additional funding for the researchers undertaking the work.
This Policy sets out the structures within the University to support and govern that activity, as well as the principles and
procedures that apply to the process of seeking and expending external research funding.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing Handbook -

The following chapters are available for consultation at: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/drafts/.
- Health Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Induction
- Travel Safety
- Contractor Safety Management
The consultation period ends on 1 February 2010.
Please provide any comments via the feedback form on the Draft Policies site.
Should you have any queries in relation to the above, please do not hesitate to contact Gerald Buttfield (ext 36079), Deb Coulls (ext 30174) or Jane Knipe (ext 34638).
The National Employment Standards (NES)
As of 1 January 2010, National Employment Standards (NES) make up a new safety net of workplace conditions for all Australian workers. The NES comprises 10 minimum conditions of employment that are set out in the Fair Work Act 2009.
In the main, the NES will result in little change to conditions of employment for staff of the University of Adelaide. The most significant changes will apply to long-term casual staff who will receive entitlements additional to those currently provided by the University in respect of unpaid parental leave, unpaid carer's leave and unpaid compassionate leave.
To assist in understanding the NES and the impact on University staff, a series of fact sheets have been developed on each of the 10 minimum standards. The minimum standards relate to:
- Maximum weekly hours of work
- Requests for flexible working arrangements
- Parental leave and related entitlements
- Annual leave
- Personal/carer's leave and compassionate leave
- Community Service leave
- Long service leave
- Public holidays
- Notice of termination and redundancy pay
- Requirement to provide new staff with a Fair Work Information Statement
You are encouraged to view the fact sheets at: www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/conditions/nes/.
If you have any concerns about the NES or other conditions of employment please contact the HR Service Centre at: hrservicecentre@adelaide.edu.au or 8313 1111.
A full copy of the NES and the Fair Work Information Statement can also be accessed at: www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/conditions/nes/.

Research Tuesdays
Commanding Health
How controlling the movement of cells can lead the fight against cancer, infection and autoimmune disease
Presenter: Professor Shaun McColl, Head of Chemokine Biology and Deputy Head of the School of Molecular & Biomedical Science.
Date/Time: Tuesday 9 February 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Law Lecture Theatre 2 (Room 333), Level 3 Ligertwood Building, North Tce Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: Imperceptible to the naked eye, our bodies are in perpetual motion. Continual cellular movement is a normal, indeed vital physiological function, assisting our growth, maintenance and immune systems.
When the body comes under certain forms of attack, however, it's a very different story. Cellular movement becomes our enemy, facilitating the spread of cancers and the development of autoimmune disease.
But what if that movement could be isolated and controlled? Could these pathologies be slowed, halted or even prevented?
Research at the University of Adelaide's School of Molecular & Biomedical Science appears to be saying, "Yes". And in this inspiring presentation, Professor Shaun McColl explains how.
Adelaide onLION members can register at: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysfeb.
Non members: RSVP is essential. Please fill in the registration form.

The Inaugural Robyn van Heeswijck Lecture
Climate change: Current status and future strategies for the Australian wine industry
Presenter: Dr Leanne Webb, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Melbourne/CSIRO.
Date/Time: Monday 15 February 2010, 4:00pm
Venue: Plant Research Centre Auditorium, Waite Campus
Cost: FREE
Synopsis: "Research indicating that greenhouse gases produced by humans are very likely to have contributed to the recent warming of the climate, and that concentrations of these gases are projected to increase in the future, is to me compelling and, of course, central to my work. I do not think any person working in the wine industry can deny how important climate is to their product..... so I believe an understanding of the changing climate, and potential implications of this, is essential to the future of this industry".
The Inaugural Robyn van Heeswijck Lecture is named in honour of the former Senior Lecturer whose life and world class research was cut short after a courageous battle with cancer. This lecture recognises early career researchers that share her passion and commitment to the improvement of the grape and wine industry. While at the University of Adelaide (1995-2002), Robyn van Heeswijck researched various aspects of grapevine and molecular biology, with a particularly strong contribution to the area of nitrogen metabolism and phylloxera research.

Enhance Learning and Teaching with Video Conferencing
Video conferencing can have a dramatic effect on learning and teaching enabling classes to span multiple lecture theatres between campuses and even institutions, locally, nationally and internationally. Today, video conferencing systems transcend the simple "talking heads" on a screen with full interactivity between the lecturer and class. Lecturers can use video conferencing to reduce repeated lectures or teach students across campuses.
Video conferencing can also enhance the way the University does business over its multiple campuses with productivity gains in time saved travelling. It can also be used to strengthen bonds with remote colleagues between personal visits and telephone calls. Use Video Conferencing to reduce downtime and increase quality of life for people who would normally travel between campuses for meetings.
The University of Adelaide has state-of-the-art video conferencing facilities on the three campuses of North Terrace, Waite and Roseworthy for lectures and meetings. Full support and training is available.
For further information and to make a booking contact Technology Services, Teaching Technologies on 8303 3933, email: videoconferencing@adelaide.edu.au or refer to Video Conferencing on the Technology Services site: www.adelaide.edu.au/its/av/video_conf/.

These workshops will enable staff to raise issues, access information and develop strategies for interacting effectively in diverse global communities.
In addition, four independent staff development modules are offered centrally by the CLPD and the Adelaide Graduate Centre. These are designed to complement each other; professional and academic staff may choose to attend one or more sessions, according to their needs.
