Researcher warns on herbal medicines
A University of Adelaide forensic pathologist thinks some people's fear of ridicule about taking herbal medicines, or "natural" products, can leave them vulnerable to taking a lethal cocktail of drugs. Professor Roger Byard, the George Richard Marks Professor of Pathology within the School of Medical Sciences, has published a research paper on the dangers of herbal medicines when taken in excess, injected or combined with use of prescription drugs. "Although obviously a number of herbal substances are quite safe, you don't know what's in the package sometimes and there may be interactions, so it is important to talk to your doctor," Professor Byard said. "There's a false perception that herbal remedies are safer than manufactured medicines, when in fact many contain potentially lethal concentrations of arsenic, mercury and lead. "These substances may cause serious illnesses, exacerbate pre-existing health problems or result in death," he said.
