'Kidnap' a joey to save a species
Australian scientists are taking babies from the pouches of endangered marsupial mothers in a bid to save their species from imminent extinction. Wallaby babies are carefully transferred into the pouches of surrogate mothers of another common species, held in captivity, where they are raised to adulthood in safety. The dramatic technique has been developed by scientists at the University of Adelaide and Adelaide Zoo, adopting aspects of marsupial reproductive biology. According to lead researcher Dr David Taggart, from the Discipline of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, the state of Australia's fauna demands drastic measures. He said that 40% of the country's animal species are deemed to be endangered or vulnerable to extinction. "Instead of them producing one young a year, using this technique we can get eight or nine pouch young produced by every female every year. So it has a dramatic effect on the breeding rate of that species," he said. The brush tailed rock wallaby was the first species to be targeted for preservation using the pouch-swap technique, which is better known as cross species fostering.

Participation in Cooperative Research Centres Policy
For Consultation
It is proposed to delete the existing Policy and replace it with a set of internal business requirements, linked to the Commonwealth Government CRC Program Guidelines. The current Policy was authorised in 2006, and amended in 2009 to take into account changes in the Government's Guidelines. The intention is to provide the University with a more responsive and effective basis to facilitate participation in CRC bids, and allow a more rapid response to any further changes in Government processes. The existing authorities within the current Policy will remain in effect.
The consultation period ends on Monday 15 March 2010.

Date/Time: Tuesday 9 March 2010, 5:30pm
Venue change: Ligertwood, Law Lecture Theatre 2 (Room 333), North Tce Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: When Labor swept to power in 2007 it carried a clear mandate to bury the Howard Government's controversial Work Choices reforms.
Its Fair Work legislation, which took effect in July 2009, was eagerly anticipated by those seeking a more equitable balance between employee rights and employer flexibility.
But 8 months on, controversy remains. Some say Fair Work delivers. Some say it's little different. Others, including Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, say it goes too far.
So how has Fair Work changed labour laws? What are its implications? And can the Coalition present a deregulatory alternative without reigniting community protest?
As another election looms, the University of Adelaide's Professor Andrew Stewart presents a timely exploration of these important issues.
