Group of Eight Review's sum of all fears: maths is in serious decline

The number of school students in Australia studying maths and science is falling to dangerous levels, prompting warnings of a critical shortage in skilled workers. The Review of Education in Mathematics, Data Science and Quantitative Disciplines (pdf) reveals students are losing interest in maths and science in primary school, leading to a decline in the number of Year 12 advanced maths students going on to degrees in key skills shortage areas. Professor Peter Dowd, Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide, said that Australia was producing not enough engineers to keep up with major defence and mining projects. Industry demand for mathematics and statistics graduates was predicted to grow by 3.5 per cent a year until 2013. The Review calls for primary school teachers to be given extra resources to make maths and science "fun" and "exciting" for students. It also recommends remedial classes in advanced maths and science at the beginning of university, to allow Year 12 students who rejected the subjects the chance to still study maths and science-based degrees. Professor Dowd said the shortage of maths and science teachers also need to be addressed, in order to ensure students get taught by highly skilled teachers who are passionate about those subjects.

General Information for Staff

University of Adelaide Volunteers update

The University of Adelaide Volunteer program, under the patronage of Mrs Lindsay McWha, continues to expand with the program providing an integral link between the University and the wider community and adding to the richness of university life by involving a diverse range of people in a variety of activities. At the end of 2009 some 1891 volunteers were registered, contributing approximately 210,069 volunteer hours. Using the figure of $22.08 per hour recommended by Volunteering Australia the dollar contribution to the University amounted to around $4,638,323. Not included in these statistics are over 1400 Clinical Title holders who gave varying amounts of their time throughout the year and a large number of people who contribute their time at the Roseworthy Campus. To recognise the contribution of Volunteers, the Annual Recognition Event will be held in Bonython Hall on Friday 11 June 2010.

Call for volunteers for April Graduations

The April graduations will be held from 12-19 April 2010 and volunteers are needed to help out with the ceremonies.

These ceremonies are major public events for the University and attended by up to 1,000 people per ceremony. It is important that we provide the graduands and their guests with the best opportunity to enjoy the experience and Graduations can only do that with the assistance of your wonderful staff.

Therefore, the Graduations Office asks for your help in encouraging staff from your areas to volunteer for the various roles and responsibilities involved in the ceremonies to ensure they run smoothly.

For an updated description of all Roles and Responsibilities see: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/sas/graduations.html then go to 'Graduations Roles and Responsibilities' under 'Conducting the Graduation Ceremonies'.

If you are able to assist please email Nima Torabi by Friday 9 April.

Telecommunications Services

The University's agreement with Macquarie Telecom for telecommunications services is nearing an end. In accordance with the University's procurement processes, the University issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the telecommunications market to seek proposals from interested providers. This process is expected to be completed by the end of March.

If a new provider is selected, holders of existing University mobile phones will be able to retain their existing phone numbers; however a transition process will apply. This is likely to involve taking your phone to a specified location where your data will be transferred to a new SIM card. Times and locations for this will be advertised in advance.

More information regarding the outcomes of the RFP and transition arrangements, if required, will be communicated as soon as possible.

Enquiries: Telecommunications Helpdesk on 33333 or email servicedesk@adelaide.edu.au.

Forms & Processes for Managing Casual Staff

From 4 March 2010, some minor changes have been made to the forms / processes for managing casual staff:

1. Amendments to the Offer of Casual Employment - Academic Staff (Semester)
Previously the "Amendment to the Offer of Casual Employment - Academic Staff (Semester)" was a complete replacement of the original document. This has been a source of frustration for local areas who find this an excessive imposition of time, so to streamline this process the amendment form has changed to include only the current work commitment details and the amended details. The new amendment form, just like the previous amendment process, still requires the signature of the casual employee as this is a change to the original sessions offered.

2. Casual contracts for academic staff
In instances where casual employees employed using the Offer of Casual Employment – Academic Staff (Semester), i.e. undertaking semester teaching activities, are required to carry out additional work beyond the end of the semester e.g. Marking, etc. please ensure that the "Employment Period" dates have been extended to cover ad hoc additional work. Payment for the additional ad hoc work will only be made upon submission of the Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff – Sessional rates.

3. Casual Payment Claim Forms for Academic Staff
From Thursday 4 March 2010, the current Casual Payment Claim Form for Academic Staff will be replaced with two new forms available on the HR website as follows:

4. Original signatures
To accommodate the logistics of staff members who are located remotely, a scanned employee signature on a timesheet is acceptable if accompanied by original university authoriser signature.

Should you have any queries with respect to the above changes, please contact the Human Resources Service Centre on 8313 1111 or at: hrservicecentre@adelaide.edu.au.

School of Chemical Engineering
Research Seminar Series

"Particle Motion in Human Arteries"
Speaker: Professor Bill Easson, School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh (UK)
Date/Time: Friday 19 March, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Venue: Room S111, Engineering South Building, University of Adelaide

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases, principally atherosclerosis, are responsible for 29% of world deaths. The World Health Organisation reported coronary heart disease, stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases as the leading causes of global death. Cardiovascular diseases are associated with abnormal blood flow patterns that can cause heart attacks and stroke. Atherosclerosis is associated with vessel narrowing causing localised constrictions called 'stenoses'. It is recognised that the initiation and development of disease is a complex interplay between the local biomechanical environment, including effects produced by blood flow, and the local vascular biology. The variables inherent in an in-vivo study of the mechanisms of arterial disease are extremely complex, comprising the biology and chemistry of the materials, the geometric variation in arterial formation and, not least, the complexity of the blood itself: a non-Newtonian mixture of red and white cells increasing the normalised bulk viscosity to 400% of the carrier fluid. For this reason, studies tend to be either statistical, in-vivo or simplified numerical/experimental. In this talk I will look at the behaviour of spherical and non-spherical particles (c.10-20 microns) in idealised geometries. Experimental investigations in our laboratories using particle image velocimetry and analysis of scattering intensity demonstrate a clustering of particles in the core of the vortex and in an annulus, even at relatively low concentrations. Particle migration away from the artery wall, initially believed only to be significant in very small arteries and arterioles is shown to occur for geometries representing major arteries. This has significance for biochemical transport and biomechanical sensing on the endothelium (lining) of the artery wall.

For further information on this seminar please contact Dr Philip Kwong or visit: www.chemeng.adelaide.edu.au/seminars/.

First in, first served. Don't miss out! Contact: Dr Ian Green, phone 8303 6035 or 0438 756 936, to reserve your subsidised place.

Supervisors, this could be a great opportunity for some of your research students - please spread the word to them.
