Scramjet project wins Space Research funding
The University of Adelaide is part of an international consortium aiming to develop scramjet-based access-to-space systems, flying an autonomous scramjet vehicle at eight times the speed of sound – Mach 8, or 8600 km/h. The project has been awarded $5 million in phase one of the Australian Space Research Program. Cost-savings can be achieved through the engine's ability to take in air to mix with fuel for combustion. "Conventional rockets used to launch satellites into orbit or space shuttles have to carry rocket fuel and oxidiser which is very expensive," said Dr Con Doolan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Mechanical Engineering and leader of Adelaide's team. The aim is to produce a hybrid launch vehicle where one stage out of three in a conventional rocket will be replaced with a scramjet capable of Mach 14 or 15, the sort of speed necessary for space flight. The team, which includes Associate Professor Ben Cazzolato and Dr Laura Brooks, will be taking the lead on investigating a hypersonic vehicle's dynamics and control.

Restrictions to Vehicle Access on Western Drive
To improve pedestrian safety during the construction period of the Hughes Plaza Learning Hub, vehicle access on Western Drive (Gate 20 on North Terrace, past the Mitchell Building) will be restricted between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, for the duration of the project.
From 8:00am to 4:30pm, a dedicated traffic management contractor will be located at Gate 20 who will escort the entry and exit of essential vehicles only. From 4:30pm to 6:00pm security will escort the vehicle entry and exit. At all other times access will be unrestricted.
Furthermore, Western Drive roadway between the Hughes and Architecture buildings will be fenced off, allowing pedestrian access only. By minimising traffic in these areas we hope to limit the potential risks of injury, as part of construction works safety measures.
We hope that this will not cause too much of an inconvenience and thank you for being accommodating with the processes involved.

University of Adelaide Volunteers update
The University of Adelaide Volunteer program, under the patronage of Mrs Lindsay McWha, continues to expand with the program providing an integral link between the University and the wider community and adding to the richness of university life by involving a diverse range of people in a variety of activities. At the end of 2009 some 1891 volunteers were registered, contributing approximately 210,069 volunteer hours. Using the figure of $22.08 per hour recommended by Volunteering Australia the dollar contribution to the University amounted to around $4,638,323. Not included in these statistics are over 1400 Clinical Title holders who gave varying amounts of their time throughout the year and a large number of people who contribute their time at the Roseworthy Campus. To recognise the contribution of Volunteers, the Annual Recognition Event will be held in Bonython Hall on Friday 11 June 2010.
Call for volunteers for April Graduations
The April graduations will be held from 12-19 April 2010 and volunteers are needed to help out with the ceremonies.
These ceremonies are major public events for the University and attended by up to 1,000 people per ceremony. It is important that we provide the graduands and their guests with the best opportunity to enjoy the experience and Graduations can only do that with the assistance of your wonderful staff.
Therefore, the Graduations Office asks for your help in encouraging staff from your areas to volunteer for the various roles and responsibilities involved in the ceremonies to ensure they run smoothly.
For an updated description of all Roles and Responsibilities see: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/sas/graduations.html then go to 'Graduations Roles and Responsibilities' under 'Conducting the Graduation Ceremonies'.
If you are able to assist please email Nima Torabi by Friday 9 April.
Telecommunications Services
The University's agreement with Macquarie Telecom for telecommunications services is nearing an end. In accordance with the University's procurement processes, the University issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to the telecommunications market to seek proposals from interested providers. This process is expected to be completed by the end of March.
If a new provider is selected, holders of existing University mobile phones will be able to retain their existing phone numbers; however a transition process will apply. This is likely to involve taking your phone to a specified location where your data will be transferred to a new SIM card. Times and locations for this will be advertised in advance.
More information regarding the outcomes of the RFP and transition arrangements, if required, will be communicated as soon as possible.
Enquiries: Telecommunications Helpdesk on 33333 or email servicedesk@adelaide.edu.au.

Research Tuesdays
Defrosting Gondwana
Presenter: ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway
Date/Time: Tuesday 13 April 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: How electromagnetic "eyes" are piercing the Antarctic ice to reveal a former supercontinent's deepest secrets.
Gondwana was the Earth's last great "supercontinent" - a vast tectonic amalgamation that included Australia, Antarctica and India juxtaposed in East Gondwana around 500 million years ago.
Although East Gondwana's amalgamations have been broadly understood for some time, the dense Antarctic ice cap has kept many details well hidden. Research at the University of Adelaide, however, appears to be changing that.
Using the remote-sensing technique magnetotellurics, the team recently "looked through" the ice to image a massive proposed suture zone extending deep into the Earth's crust.
In this fascinating presentation, ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway reveals their findings and explores ways in which they've enhanced understanding of the geological history of our planet.

Date/Time: Wednesday 31 March 2010, 4:00pm - 5:30pm

Vehicles can be designed to minimise the risk of death and level of injury to a struck pedestrian. Impact testing is used to measure the extent of pedestrian protection offered by a vehicle. Such impact tests are part of regulations in Europe and Japan, and a similar regulation may be adopted in Australia in the near future. This seminar provides an overview of the potential Australian regulation, and what its implementation would mean in terms of vehicle design changes, and reductions in pedestrian death and injury.
