Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Ave atque vale - Hail and farewell

It was with sadness that the University community received the news last week that two of our most esteemed friends and colleagues had passed away.

Professor Konrad Jamrozik

Professor Konrad Jamrozik, Head of the School of Population Health and Clinical Practice in the Faculty of Health Sciences, died on 23 March after a short illness. Konrad was born in South Australia and began his medical studies at the University of Adelaide before moving to Hobart, where he completed his MBBS. He completed a DPhil at Oxford and taught briefly at the University of Papua New Guinea before moving to UWA in 1984 where he was ultimately promoted to a personal chair. He was at Imperial College, London, as Chair of Primary Care Epidemiology from 2000-2004 when he returned to UWA as Chair of Evidence-Based Health Care. He was recruited to the University of Adelaide in 2007.

Konrad was one of those rare researchers and clinicians whose work has made a really significant impact on society. From his early years as a physician and researcher, he developed a strong interest in tobacco control as he observed the dangerous consequences of smoking. His research generated significant new evidence on the impact of smoking on heart and blood vessel disease, particularly on stroke, and he completed three large clinical trials looking for better ways to help smokers to quit. His work on deaths attributable to passive smoking was a central influence in the Parliamentary debate that led to the adoption of smoke-free legislation in the UK. A conservative estimate is that: that legislation will prevent more than 100,000 premature deaths, principally through its effects in prompting active smokers to quit. He leaves a valuable legacy to the national and international community, and we will miss him.

At his family's request, Professor Jamrozik's funeral will be held at the University of Adelaide, in Bonython Hall on Wednesday 31 March at 11:00am. All members of the University community are invited to attend this celebration of his life, and graduates are invited to robe.

Liz Watson

We learnt also last week of the death of Mrs Liz Watson, also after a short illness. Liz made a very notable contribution to the University over some years. Mrs Watson studied at the Adelaide Teachers College and the University of Adelaide in the 1960s, but following her marriage moved with a young family to Papua New Guinea. She worked at the University of Technology in Lae for some years, and on returning to Adelaide in 1977, she commenced at the SA Institute of Technology, and subsequently the University of South Australia, from which she retired in 2002 as Registrar. Her keen understanding of and commitment to the student-university relationship made her a popular speaker, and she was nationally influential in the development of administrative systems and policies to manage a changing landscape of legislation and student expectations, especially in the new universities that emerged from the Dawkins reforms of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Liz was subsequently heavily involved with the University of Adelaide, conducting reviews of many aspects of our student services, most of which now rate among the best in Australia. She also served as Acting General Manager, Student Services, at the time of the consolidation of student administrative and support services. Her Memorial Service was held on Saturday 27 March.

Architect uses PhD to help rebuild devastated Aceh

Indonesian scholar Izziah Hasan receives her PhD in Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Adelaide in Singapore on 20 March 2010, more than five years since the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. She was undertaking her thesis on the architectural identity of Aceh when a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tidal wave which devastated her home town. Izziah returned to Indonesia and her teaching role in Banda Aceh. Her research experience abroad as a PhD student helped to secure a job with the Asian Development Bank, helping to rebuild the shattered communities. Izziah's completed thesis in 2009, which focused on Aceh's architectural identity, proved a major advantage in her role in the rebuilding program.

Restrictions to Vehicle Access on Western Drive

To improve pedestrian safety during the construction period of the Hughes Plaza Learning Hub, vehicle access on Western Drive (Gate 20 on North Terrace, past the Mitchell Building) will be restricted between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, for the duration of the project.

From 8:00am to 6:00pm, a dedicated traffic management contractor will be located at Gate 20 who will escort the entry and exit of essential vehicles only. At all other times access will be unrestricted.

Furthermore, Western Drive roadway between the Hughes and Architecture buildings will be fenced off. A footpath passageway will allow pedestrians and wheelchair access through. To reduce congestion in this area please use alternative routes to your destination, where possible.

By minimising traffic in these areas we hope to limit the potential risks of injury, as part of construction works safety measures. We hope that this will not cause too much of an inconvenience and thank you for being accommodating with the processes involved.

Research Tuesdays

Defrosting Gondwana
Presenter: ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 April 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: How electromagnetic "eyes" are piercing the Antarctic ice to reveal a former supercontinent's deepest secrets.

Gondwana was the Earth's last great "supercontinent" - a vast tectonic amalgamation that included Australia, Antarctica and India juxtaposed in East Gondwana around 500 million years ago.

Although East Gondwana's amalgamations have been broadly understood for some time, the dense Antarctic ice cap has kept many details well hidden. Research at the University of Adelaide, however, appears to be changing that.

Using the remote-sensing technique magnetotellurics, the team recently "looked through" the ice to image a massive proposed suture zone extending deep into the Earth's crust.

In this fascinating presentation, ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway reveals their findings and explores ways in which they've enhanced understanding of the geological history of our planet.

Adelaide OnLion members can register at: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysapril
Non members: RSVP is essential. Please fill in the registration form.

2010 CASR Seminar Series

Regulating Vehicle Design for Pedestrian Protection
Presenter: Daniel Searson

The Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) invites you to attend the 2010 series of seminars presenting a selection of the Centre's work and research outcomes.

Date/Time: Wednesday 31 March 2010, 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Venue: Art Gallery Auditorium

Vehicles can be designed to minimise the risk of death and level of injury to a struck pedestrian. Impact testing is used to measure the extent of pedestrian protection offered by a vehicle. Such impact tests are part of regulations in Europe and Japan, and a similar regulation may be adopted in Australia in the near future. This seminar provides an overview of the potential Australian regulation, and what its implementation would mean in terms of vehicle design changes, and reductions in pedestrian death and injury.
