Uni in the News

Magnesium protects fetuses

A University of Adelaide researcher has announced new national guidelines recommending that women at risk of early preterm birth use magnesium sulphate to protect their babies from cerebral palsy. Professor Caroline Crowther, from the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Robinson Institute, said the clinical practice guidelines are based on overwhelming evidence over the past 14 years that magnesium sulphate is effective in protecting the fetus. "Five trials, including one funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, confirm this finding," Professor Crowther said. "The cost to the Australian community of cerebral palsy is nearly $4 billion per annum," she said. "At present there is no cure for this neurological condition, which results in substantial disabilities."

Cars 'fail on pedestrian safety'

Two thirds of new cars sold in Australia do not pass international standards for pedestrian safety, according to the country's leading road crash organisation. Daniel Searson, from the Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) at the University of Adelaide, said of 33 models available for sale in Australia, only about six would currently pass the Global Technical Regulation (GTR) for pedestrian safety. "The key factors in vehicle design which help minimise pedestrian injuries are the car's ability to absorb impact from a human body and the clearance between the bonnet and the engine," Mr Searson said. "Currently there is no legal requirement for vehicles sold in Australia to take into account either of these design features." He said a recent CASR study estimated that at least 28 lives and about 1000 injuries could be saved each year if all car manufacturers adopted the minimum pedestrian safety requirements.

Call for applications for the Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme

The Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme is an initiative of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Committee, a subcommittee of the Vice-Chancellor's Committee. The Scheme provides seed funding of up to $5,000 for new and innovative strategies that enhance equity and diversity for students and staff at the University.

The Equity and Diversity Grants Scheme Working Party, convened by Dr Laura Grenfell, welcomes applications from staff across the University.

The closing date for applications is Friday 7 May 2010.

For full details please see the website: www.adelaide.edu.au/hr/equity/ged/grants/.

Weekend Host

The International Student Centre (ISC) would like to invite staff members of the University to take part in a pilot program, the Weekend Host, as a part of the Integration Project (IP). The IP was established in 2009 following feedback from the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) Review and the International Student Barometer – a University initiative that surveys the opinions of international students about their experience at the University and of living in Adelaide.

Social integration and the opportunity to mix with Australians has been identified by many international students as an area of unmet need. Since then, the project team has developed several initiatives and collaborated with a range of internal and external stakeholders to provide opportunities for international students to come together with local students and community members. The Weekend Host is the latest addition to the IP initiatives in addressing the social needs of international students.

If you are available in the months of April and May, and would like to take a pair of international students out for a picnic or to invite them home to have a meal with you and/or your family on one of the weekends, we would like to hear from you. Further information about the terms and conditions is available at: www.international.adelaide.edu.au/support/lcep/hosttc.html.

For further information on this particular program or other IP initiatives, please contact Jonie Schmortte or phone her on 8313 0556. To express your interest in participating in the program, please register online.

Restrictions to Vehicle Access on Western Drive

To improve pedestrian safety during the construction period of the Hughes Plaza Learning Hub, vehicle access on Western Drive (Gate 20 on North Terrace, past the Mitchell Building) will be restricted between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, for the duration of the project.

From 8:00am to 6:00pm, a dedicated traffic management contractor will be located at Gate 20 who will escort the entry and exit of essential vehicles only. At all other times access will be unrestricted.

Furthermore, Western Drive roadway between the Hughes and Architecture buildings will be fenced off. A footpath passageway will allow pedestrians and wheelchair access through. To reduce congestion in this area please use alternative routes to your destination, where possible.

By minimising traffic in these areas we hope to limit the potential risks of injury, as part of construction works safety measures. We hope that this will not cause too much of an inconvenience and thank you for being accommodating with the processes involved.

Research Tuesdays

Defrosting Gondwana
Presenter: ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 April 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: How electromagnetic "eyes" are piercing the Antarctic ice to reveal a former supercontinent's deepest secrets.

Gondwana was the Earth's last great "supercontinent" - a vast tectonic amalgamation that included Australia, Antarctica and India juxtaposed in East Gondwana around 500 million years ago.

Although East Gondwana's amalgamations have been broadly understood for some time, the dense Antarctic ice cap has kept many details well hidden. Research at the University of Adelaide, however, appears to be changing that.

Using the remote-sensing technique magnetotellurics, the team recently "looked through" the ice to image a massive proposed suture zone extending deep into the Earth's crust.

In this fascinating presentation, ARC Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr Kate Selway reveals their findings and explores ways in which they've enhanced understanding of the geological history of our planet.

Non members: RSVP is essential. Please fill in the registration form.
