New test will help identify viral cattle disease

A University of Adelaide project could provide a breakthrough for a viral cattle disease costing Australian producers millions of dollars each year. Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) infects up to 90% of cattle herds in Australia, leading to widespread production losses and increased susceptibility to other diseases, according to researcher Sasha Lanyon. The Animal Science Honours student based at the Roseworthy Campus is working on a project to develop a pooled blood test to identify herds with an active infection and target those animals shedding the virus. "Testing pooled samples rather than spot tests can reduce the number of tests needed to identify the virus and, in turn, reduce the cost of testing for producers," Sasha said.

Research to widen SA's durum potential

Growers outside of the traditional durum-growing areas of the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula may soon have the opportunity to grow the lucrative niche crop, thanks to research by the University of Adelaide. The University's senior durum wheat breeder Dr Tony Rathjen, said one of the main aims of the breeding program was to produce varieties suited to the more marginal cereal growing areas in South Australia. Dr Rathjen said that the new variety WID801 (53188) seemed to do better in trials in areas such as Minnipa, Rudall, Wokurna, Ungarra and Urania. Orders were now being taken for the variety, which is expected to be named and formally released in mid-April. "It offers similar grain yields to Hyperno, but it offers other advantages such as better quality, less susceptibility to crown rot and better growth habits," he said.
SA produced 130,000 tonnes of durum last year, almost double the previous year's figure.

Weekend Host

The International Student Centre (ISC) would like to invite staff members of the University to take part in a pilot program, the Weekend Host, as a part of the Integration Project (IP). The IP was established in 2009 following feedback from the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) Review and the International Student Barometer – a University initiative that surveys the opinions of international students about their experience at the University and of living in Adelaide.

Social integration and the opportunity to mix with Australians has been identified by many international students as an area of unmet need. Since then, the project team has developed several initiatives and collaborated with a range of internal and external stakeholders to provide opportunities for international students to come together with local students and community members. The Weekend Host is the latest addition to the IP initiatives in addressing the social needs of international students.

If you are available in the months of April and May, and would like to take a pair of international students out for a picnic or to invite them home to have a meal with you and/or your family on one of the weekends, we would like to hear from you. Further information about the terms and conditions is available at: www.international.adelaide.edu.au/support/lcep/hosttc.html.

For further information on this particular program or other IP initiatives, please contact Jonie Schmortte or phone her on 8313 0556. To express your interest in participating in the program, please register online.

"Not all Australians think like Ziggi ... his side are just louder"

Talkback radio host Ziggi Blasco influences the mighty and the impotent through the airwaves of his city. He rants about the terrorist threat, attacks political correctness and extols the virtues of common sense. Sound familiar?

But in private, Ziggi's influence is rapidly shrinking as his family and domestic staff find him increasingly irrelevant and repulsive. Worse still, his father is threatening to reveal a devastating secret that could end his career and tear his world apart.

Written and set in 2005 in the wake of the cash for comment scandal, David Williamson's modern comedy of manners explores Australia's identity crisis at the beginning of the new millennium.

The cast comprises Emily Branford, Alicia Case, Michael Eustice, David Jobling, Cate Rogers, Tony Sampson and Kate Vanderhorst and the production is directed by award winning local actor and director, Brant Eustice.

Influence promises to be an entertaining and enlightening night that will get you thinking about the unthinking!
