Hill to become Uni of Adelaide Chancellor
Former Australian ambassador to the United Nations, the Hon. Robert Hill, has been appointed Chancellor of the University of Adelaide for a two-year term commencing 26 July 2010. Mr Hill, a former federal Senator, is chair of the Australian Carbon Trust Ltd and is an Adjunct Professor in Sustainability at the United States Studies Centre, University of Sydney. University of Adelaide Deputy Chancellor, Pamela Martin, said Mr Hill had a longstanding interest in education, and she expected he would help the University with its future growth plans. Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor James McWha, said Mr Hill's "immense experience and expertise" would prove invaluable as the University continued to build its great research tradition. Mr Hill said he looked forward to his new responsibility of supporting the University to build on its reputation as a great institution for education and scholarship. Mr Hill, who is an Adelaide graduate in arts and law, will be the University's 15th Chancellor and will succeed the Hon. John von Doussa QC, who retires from the position on 25 July.

Study links heart disease to ovary cysts
An Australian study has identified a previously unsuspected cause of heart disease in women, the hormonal disorder polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The condition affects about ten per cent of women of reproductive age and it is a leading cause of infertility. Adelaide-based researchers have warned that young women with PCOS may show signs of irregular heart function otherwise expected in much older patients with known heart disease. "The degree of blood clotting and blood vessel abnormalities seen in women with PCOS in this study was very striking," said Dr Alicia Chan, a cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and PhD student with the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute. "With women now making up almost half of all Australians affected by heart disease, it's very important that we understand the link between PCOS and these heart disease risk factors," she said. "This is the first study to suggest that PCOS is strongly associated with an increased risk of heart disease independent of women's weight or evidence of diabetes." A larger study will now be staged in a bid to confirm the results.
