Uni in the News

Female foetuses deal better with stress

A 12-year University of Adelaide study has found that a male foetus finds it harder to deal with prolonged stress during pregnancy. The study has found while male foetuses initially better handle stress factors such as smoking, females have a steadier growth pattern if stress continues in mum. Research leader Associate Professor Vicki Clifton, from the Robinson Institute at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, said the male baby often needs greater protection and is at greater risk of pre-term delivery or stopping growing. She said the results will help develop sex-specific therapies as well as more accurate growth and development predictions for foetuses at risk.

Call for SA to limit young driver passengers

A road safety researcher has called for South Australia to join other states in limiting passenger numbers in the cars of inexperienced drivers. Dr Lisa Wundersitz, from the University of Adelaide's Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR), said 16 to 24-year-olds were involved in one-third of fatal crashes last year in SA but make up only 13 per cent of the driving population. Dr Wundersitz said the State Government must challenge the risk-taking attitudes of young male drivers and encourage all young motorists to buy safer cars with features such as electronic stability control.

General Information for Staff

Safe Work Australia Awards winner

Congratulations to Nicola Featherstone who won Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety – without experience, at the 5th Annual Safe Work Australia Awards in Canberra.

Nicola joined the University of Adelaide in 1979 as a Technical Assistant and is now a Research Officer in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine at the Waite Campus.

In response to a WorkCover audit conducted throughout the University which highlighted a lack of resources and training in laboratories, Nicola produced a resource folder for the laboratory she was working in.

The resource folder contained all information required for induction of new staff and training records. This project has expanded to over 100 folders with one located in every laboratory. They are easily kept up-to-date and adapted to the requirements of individual laboratories. They continue to be an invaluable resource to University staff.

eChallenge 2010 calls aspiring entrepreneurs

The University of Adelaide is offering a share of $50,000 in cash and prizes to lure aspiring entrepreneurs to take part in its annual eChallenge program.

The eChallenge (Entrepreneurs' Challenge), hosted and organised by the Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation & Innovation Centre, is a business plan competition targeted at university students from any discipline. This competition is also open to students from other universities, TAFE and the broader community.

The eChallenge requires teams of two to six people, one of whom must be a currently enrolled student from any tertiary institution in South Australia - to develop a business plan, for a new previously unfunded concept.

The teams are offered help in the form of a series of workshops and the support of a mentor from the business community. The business plans developed by the teams are judged by high profile executives from the government and business community. In a nutshell, the eChallenge offers great advice and great exposure.

eChallenge coordinator Diana Lucic said the competition aimed to hone business skills among students. "eChallenge exposes students and other team members to high quality coaching and feedback," she said. "The competition benefits the students and their eventual employers and has even helped to fast track a number of innovative South Australian businesses."

Enter the eChallenge 2010 via the Team Registration Form available at: www.adelaide.edu.au/echallenge/ by Wednesday 2 June.

For further information, attend the eChallenge information session on Thursday 13 May, at Piper Alderman, 167 Flinders St, Adelaide, from 5:30pm - 7:00pm.
RSVP to eChallenge@adelaide.edu.au for catering purposes.

Research Tuesdays

A World of Hurt
The true global death count of environmental degradation

Presenter: Professor Corey Bradshaw, Professor of Ecological Modelling, University of Adelaide's Environment Institute
Date/Time: Tuesday 11 May 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Napier Building, Lecture Theatre G04, North Tce Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: It's no secret that environmental degradation has been shown to have damaged people's health, often fatally, in many specific cases. Now, however, world-leading research at the University of Adelaide has linked the two on a staggering global scale.

Using data from over 100 countries, Professor Corey Bradshaw has examined the relationships between key indicators of human health and environmental quality and discovered a clear correlation, with dire implications. As only one example, his findings indicate just a 10% overall reduction in water quality would raise infant deaths by 35.5 million per year.

It's vital information for people and planet. And in this important presentation Professor Bradshaw will reveal the full story.

Adelaide onLION members can register at: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysmay.
Non members: RSVP is essential. Please fill in the registration form.

"Not all Australians think like Ziggi ... his side are just louder"

Talkback radio host Ziggi Blasco influences the mighty and the impotent through the airwaves of his city. He rants about the terrorist threat, attacks political correctness and extols the virtues of common sense. Sound familiar?

But in private, Ziggi's influence is rapidly shrinking as his family and domestic staff find him increasingly irrelevant and repulsive. Worse still, his father is threatening to reveal a devastating secret that could end his career and tear his world apart.

Written and set in 2005 in the wake of the cash for comment scandal, David Williamson's modern comedy of manners explores Australia's identity crisis at the beginning of the new millennium.

The cast comprises Emily Branford, Alicia Case, Michael Eustice, David Jobling, Cate Rogers, Tony Sampson and Kate Vanderhorst and the production is directed by award winning local actor and director, Brant Eustice.

Influence promises to be an entertaining and enlightening night that will get you thinking about the unthinking!

Team-Based Learning (TBL) workshop series

The four-workshop series will run over two days, Wednesday 5 May & Thursday 6 May.

Team-Based Learning is a teaching approach designed specifically for large classes. It uses student teams to create active and dynamic learning in lectures and seminars, and to put an emphasis on student accountability for learning. It positions the lecturer as an expert guide available to students as they engage with core concepts in preparatory readings and then in discussion and activities in class.

This is a rare opportunity to attend one or more workshops by someone who is regarded as one of the leading exponents of TBL in the world. Spaces are strictly limited, so it would be best to register your attendance by email to Kerrie LeLievre as soon as possible.
