Hickinbotham lived full life in business and sport
Alan David Hickinbotham AM (1925-2010), who died on 25 May after a long illness, aged 84, was many things in his full life - a businessman, industry leader, winemaker, migrant-sponsor and footballer.
A measure of his success and style is that the family name adorns one of Australia's largest homebuilding companies, as well as the state-of-the-art Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory at the University of Adelaide and The Hickinbotham Hall at the National Wine Centre.
In 1948 he graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Science and Diploma of Education, and taught at school between 1949 and 1951.

More older Australians dying of asthma
The number of people over 45 dying from asthma attacks has increased in the past five years, according to research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. In 2006, 402 people died from asthma, up from 318 the year before.
Professor Dick Ruffin AM, Professor of Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Deputy Head of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, said while the prevalence of asthma is more common among younger people, the older generation is not immune.
"The thought that older people can't get asthma for the first time in later life is incorrect ... people can get asthma later on," he said. People with asthma say the study's findings highlight the importance of having the disorder diagnosed early.

At Council meeting 3/10 held on 10 May 2010, Council resolved to rescind the Participation in Cooperative Research Centres Policy
and to approve the authorities previously contained in the aforementioned Policy.

University plans for a smoke-free campus
The University of Adelaide is committed to providing a healthy environment for staff, students and the wider community who share and visit our campuses.
As an institution of higher learning, we cannot ignore the serious health risks associated with exposure to second-hand (passive smoke).
Last year, the University's Pulteney Street precinct was officially declared a smoke-free area (inside and outside buildings). This demonstrated the University's resolve to encourage healthier lifestyle choices and to minimise the impact of smoke on our students, staff and visitors.
Following this, a working party including representatives from OHSW, Health Sciences, Legal and Risk, Communications and the student body has now prepared a draft policy to establish a smoke-free environment at ALL University of Adelaide campuses. The draft process is available online for consultation until 14 June 2010.
I encourage you to read the policy and provide any feedback and suggestions. This will help us move towards a smoke-free campus for the benefit of the University community and the South Australian public.
If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Voelker at: kelly.voelker@adelaide.edu.au.

Trish Hughes, Director, Human Resources
Field Geology Club of SA, Royal Society of SA & Geological Society of Australia (SA Branch) lecture
"Homo Geologicus: measures of the geological dimension of human activity"
By Professor Mike Sandiford, University of Melbourne
Synopsis: Human activity is modifying landscapes, soils, atmosphere and ocean chemistry, even creating earthquakes, in geologically significant ways. We are already geo-engineering our planet, albeit unwittingly. The geological scale of human activity suggests we would be well served to reframe our understanding of the earth's natural resources in terms of a service model and to that end I will outline a "crustal service" paradigm, that may help shape such thinking.
Date/Time: Thursday 10 June 2010, 7:00pm
Venue: Mawson Lecture Theatre, Mawson Laboratories (near corner of Victoria Drive and Frome Road)
Visitors are warmly invited to attend. For further details contact Frances Williams on 0403 153 726 or Paul Curnow on 0402 079 578.

Research Tuesdays
Feeding Anxiety - The World Food Crisis Forum
Date/Time: Tuesday 8 June 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: If the growing body of experts is right, dwindling global food security poses a significant threat to much of humanity. Influenced by numerous factors, including climate change, population growth and rising fuel costs, it has the potential to cause widespread famine and civil unrest. Indeed, in many countries, it already is.
In this live forum, four leading University of Adelaide thinkers on the topic will explore the most critical issues surrounding the crisis and invite questions from the floor. Is it a problem of supply or access? What ethical questions does it raise about our own consumption? Can scientists enhance yields, and is modern high-production agriculture necessarily the best way forward?
Speakers include:
- Associate Professor Rachel Ankeny, School of History and Politics
- Professor Roger Leigh, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine
- Professor Randy Stringer, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine
- Master of Ceremonies: Professor Peter Langridge, CEO, Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG)
