Rising motorcycle toll calls for tougher licensing
Inexperience and inadequate training before being issued a licence are among key issues in the increasing number of serious and fatal motorcycle road accidents, according to a University of Adelaide road safety researcher. Dr Matthew Baldock, from the University's Centre for Automotive Safety Research, said motorcyclists have a greater risk of injury because they are less protected than in other vehicles. But motorcycle accidents could be reduced through changes to licensing regulations including increasing the minimum age, increasing the time new riders have to spend on provisional and learner licences, increased mandatory training and no reduction in the motorcycle licensing period associated with having a car driver's licence.

Consumers need more options
Farmers Markets are not the only answer to connecting consumers with fresh farm produce, according to Professor Barbara Santich, from the University of Adelaide's School of History and Politics. The author of six books, including her latest Looking for Flavour, said just 5 per cent of Australian consumers choose to shop at these markets, and the vast majority are still drawn to the convenience and discounting of supermarkets.
Professor Santich said it would be far more effective for supermarkets to display regional providence of their fresh produce, rather than simply labelling it as a product of Australia.
She said consumers can also buy fresh baskets of produce weekly from farmers through programs such as Food Connect.

General Information for Staff
Sustainable Research Excellence: Survey 2
The University will run its SRE Staff Time Use Survey 2 from Tuesday 15 June to Monday 28 June inclusive.
The SRE scheme is a Federal Government initiative designed to fund the indirect costs of research and the University is participating in order to gain access to millions of dollars of new funds that will help provide ongoing research infrastructure and critical funding for new research initiatives.
Full participation in this survey by all staff who undertake research is critical, as the results of Survey 2 will be more heavily weighted when DIISR determines the University's final funding allocation.
Staff who are required to participate will receive an email with a link to the online survey tool on Tuesday 15 June. Please visit the SRE web site for more information and, if you are participating, please make yourself familiar with the instructions for correctly allocating your time in the survey timesheets.
It is especially critical that time at conferences or visiting colleagues is correctly recorded in the appropriate 'work time' category (and not as time on leave).
For more information, please visit the SRE web site, email us at: sre@adelaide.edu.au, or call the SRE Helpline on 8313 1110.
University of Adelaide Club opens new doors
The University of Adelaide Club has opened in its new premises on Level 4 of Union House, North Terrace Campus for members to dine at and purchase wine from. The Club moved from its building on Hughes Plaza due to the development of the Learning Hub.
Where to find us - see a location map and photos at: www.adelaide.edu.au/clubs/uniclub/newclub.html.
Changes to Access
As the Hughes Plaza demolition work gets underway, the final stages of the building site closure have to be implemented to ensure the safety of staff, students and the public. This will include the closing of the current access path, past the University Club old premises to the Architecture building auto door, which will be closed from early June 2010 for the duration of the Project (click here for map view).
Alternative access to Architecture, Computer Science, Health Services, Flentje Lecture Theatre and Polygon Lecture Theatre will be via the Horace Lamb Building auto door on Level 1.
If you have further queries regarding this closure please contact Slavka Kovacevic on 8303 3601.

University plans for a smoke-free campus
The University of Adelaide is committed to providing a healthy environment for staff, students and the wider community who share and visit our campuses.
As an institution of higher learning, we cannot ignore the serious health risks associated with exposure to second-hand (passive smoke).
Last year, the University's Pulteney Street precinct was officially declared a smoke-free area (inside and outside buildings). This demonstrated the University's resolve to encourage healthier lifestyle choices and to minimise the impact of smoke on our students, staff and visitors.
Following this, a working party including representatives from OHSW, Health Sciences, Legal and Risk, Communications and the student body has now prepared a draft policy to establish a smoke-free environment at ALL University of Adelaide campuses. The draft process is available online for consultation until 14 June 2010.
I encourage you to read the policy and provide any feedback and suggestions. This will help us move towards a smoke-free campus for the benefit of the University community and the South Australian public.
If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Voelker at: kelly.voelker@adelaide.edu.au.

School of Chemical Engineering
Research Seminar Series
"Engineering Membrane Processes for use in Gas Separation, Dairy Processing and Water Treatment"
Speaker: Professor Sandra Kentish, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Melbourne
Date/Time: Friday 11 June, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Venue: Room S111, Engineering South Building, University of Adelaide
Abstract: Membrane technology is becoming an increasingly common unit operation both within Australia and internationally. The surge in market demand arises predominantly from advances in polymer science that have allowed the development of ultra-thin, selective polymer barriers. Membranes are now used extensively in natural gas processing, dairy manufacture and in water treatment and desalination.
This presentation will focus on three specific research projects in this space. The use of membrane contactors as a mechanism for the capture of carbon dioxide from flue gases offers the potential to substantially reduce the capital cost of this operation. However, the choice of membrane material must be optimized to reduce wetting. These contactors have been trialled both in the laboratory and at pilot scale on real industrial flue gases. Alternatively, the use of both ceramic and polymeric membranes for the separation of dairy casein from whey is being considered as a more natural alternative to the use of acid or rennet to coagulate the casein protein. However, a high shear stress must be maintained across the membrane surface and this is more difficult for the polymeric systems. Finally, both nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes are gaining increasing market share for water purification and desalination. These membranes separate on the basis of charge as well as molecular size. An understanding of the charge effects is important in determining the performance of the membrane in a mixed salt solution.

Field Geology Club of SA, Royal Society of SA & Geological Society of Australia (SA Branch) lecture
"Homo Geologicus: measures of the geological dimension of human activity"
By Professor Mike Sandiford, University of Melbourne
Synopsis: Human activity is modifying landscapes, soils, atmosphere and ocean chemistry, even creating earthquakes, in geologically significant ways. We are already geo-engineering our planet, albeit unwittingly. The geological scale of human activity suggests we would be well served to reframe our understanding of the earth's natural resources in terms of a service model and to that end I will outline a "crustal service" paradigm, that may help shape such thinking.
