Uni in the News

iPad's in the lecture theatre

Just a week after being released in Australia, Apple's new touchscreen device, the iPad, is being used at the University of Adelaide to boost student interaction in lectures. Computer Science lecturer Dr Nick Falkner is using the iPad with a specially written application, developed in Adelaide, to almost instantly measure and graphically display student responses.
Dr Falkner said the new technology will improve student learning by helping bring lectures to life and raising participation and attention. "This iPad application lets us quickly find out what students are thinking and display their answers back to them almost immediately within the lecture," he said.

The Jabulani ball - a study in motion

Fast and furious play at this year's World Cup is to be expected, based on the aerodynamics of the new football called Jabulani.
Scientists from the University of Adelaide have put the ball to the test, comparing Jabulani to the previous World Cup ball, Teamgeist, and a traditional ball.
Professor Derek Leinweber, Head of the School of Chemistry & Physics, said he could see why the players were "having a bit of trouble" with the new ball as they struggled with the combined effects of thin air at high altitude and a ball that is designed to go faster and bend more. "If you go up to altitude, the ball is going to plough through the air even easier because the pressure is lower," he said. "Then on top of that, you've got a ball that is designed to move through the air better. Those two things together I think are really surprising people."

General Information for Staff

Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE) Survey 2 starts today

The second Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE) Staff Time Use survey starts today.

All staff who are required to participate have now received an email containing the link to the online survey tool. The survey runs for a fortnight and responses must be lodged by close of business Tuesday 29 June.

It should take no more than about 10 minutes per week to complete the survey.

Your participation in Survey 2

  • Participation by staff who undertake research is essential if the University is to achieve a strong funding outcome: DIISR will place a greater weight on the results of Survey 2 in determining the University's final funding allocation.
  • Time at a conference or visiting colleagues in relation to existing research should be recorded in the appropriate 'work time' category (e.g ACG Research). This should not be recorded as leave time. Learn more.
  • What goes where? A full list of the activities to record in each category is available here.
  • For more information, visit the SRE web site, call the SRE Helpline on 8313 1110 or email us at: sre@adelaide.edu.au.

TRIM Tip

Document Queues

Document Queues can be created for you by the TRIM Team and mapped to a folder located on your desktop or shared drive.

Documents can be saved or scanned to the folder and then registered in TRIM directly from the Document Queue. Several TRIM users can then access the queue to register documents into TRIM. This enables staff to share the workload of registering documents in TRIM.

Document Queues can then be added to your Favourites Toolbar in TRIM.

If you would like more information about document queues or to have one mapped for you, please contact the TRIM helpdesk on 35334.

Research Tuesdays

We're born like that

New research shows males and females approach risk-taking differently even in utero

Date/Time: Tuesday 13 July 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.

Synopsis: An incredible new chapter has been revealed in the still unfolding story of human in-utero development. Research at the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute has shown the human fetus is able to deliberately slow and modify its development in response to a sub-optimal maternal environment, such as if the mother has a pre-existing disease or suffers extreme stress.

This increases its chances of survival. But remarkably, only female fetuses use the ability. Males instead "roll the dice" and attempt to continue growing at their normal rate, placing them at greater risk should further complications arise. Associate Professor Vicki Clifton discusses this fascinating growth mechanism and its possible implications for managing pregnancy.

Associate Professor Vicki Clifton is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and has been part of the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute, Department of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health since January 2008. She is also Director of Clinical Research at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide.

Adelaide OnLion members can register at: www.alumni.adelaide.edu.au/researchtuesdaysjuly
Non members: RSVP is essential. Please fill in the registration form.
