Teach our kids to drive at school
The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) wants to develop its own road safety curriculum for schools, increasing pressure on the State Government to make it a compulsory subject. The MAC has commissioned the University of Adelaide's Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) to investigate how schools across Australia and the world conduct road safety education, in a bid to stem the growing road toll.
CASR Research Officer Dr Lisa Wundersitz said the study was in its early stages. She said the research team was initially looking at the effectiveness of road safety programs in Australia, before widening their scope to international programs.

Researchers swot up on insect movements
Insects may have tiny brains, the size of a pinhead, but the latest research from the University of Adelaide shows just how clever they really are. Researchers from the University's Discipline of Physiology have worked out how insects judge the speed of moving objects.
In a paper published in Current Biology, lead author Associate Professor David O'Carroll said insects have well identified brain cells dedicated to analysing visual motion, which are very similar to humans.
Understanding this has tangible benefits. "Vehicles of the future might be bristling with little insect eyes and insect brains to help them track the motion of other vehicles on the road, and there are also some interesting applications for this technology in medical bionics," he said.

Golden Jubilee Reunion
Call for 1960 graduates
Did you graduate - or know someone who graduated - from the University of Adelaide in 1960?
We are seeking 1960 graduates (and staff from that era) to take part in our Golden Jubilee Reunion, to be held at the University of Adelaide's North Terrace Campus on Friday, 15 October 2010.
The Reunion activities include a Commemoration Ceremony with senior staff, graduates, family and friends held in Bonython Hall at 10:30am, followed by a Graduate Luncheon (ticket required) in the Mortlock Chamber, South Australian State Library.
All University staff and students are welcome to attend the Commemoration Ceremony - tickets are not required.
The Golden Jubilee Reunion is a rare opportunity for graduates, family and friends to renew acquaintances and to celebrate their 50 years as a graduate of one of Australia's finest universities. It has proven to be a highlight of the Development and Alumni program and has made a huge contribution to the life story, fabric and rich tradition of the University of Adelaide.
The commemorations were initiated by the former Alumni Association in 1986 to coincide with the Bonython Hall Jubilee and the sesquicentenary of the State. This year marks the 25th consecutive Golden Jubilee Reunion.

Launch into ORBIT!
Have you had a message saying 'Neg Trans' appear where projection figures would normally display in the Project Summary section for your project in the ORBIT Project Reporting Module? This means that a negative income transaction has occurred against your project, which could cause its net available balance figure to be overstated if not addressed. Once the negative transaction has been accounted for, which can be done by anyone who has completed training and been granted Enter Projections access to the particular project, the projection figures will once again display.
For further assistance, contact the ORBIT helpdesk at: orbit@adelaide.edu.au or phone 8303 1391.
TRIM Tip
Document Queues
Document Queues can be created for you by the TRIM Team and mapped to a folder located on your desktop or shared drive.
Documents can be saved or scanned to the folder and then registered in TRIM directly from the Document Queue. Several TRIM users can then access the queue to register documents into TRIM. This enables staff to share the workload of registering documents in TRIM.
Document Queues can then be added to your Favourites Toolbar in TRIM.
If you would like more information about document queues or to have one mapped for you, please contact the TRIM helpdesk on 35334.

Research Tuesdays
We're born like that
New research shows males and females approach risk-taking differently even in utero
Date/Time: Tuesday 13 July 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: An incredible new chapter has been revealed in the still unfolding story of human in-utero development. Research at the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute has shown the human fetus is able to deliberately slow and modify its development in response to a sub-optimal maternal environment, such as if the mother has a pre-existing disease or suffers extreme stress.
This increases its chances of survival. But remarkably, only female fetuses use the ability. Males instead "roll the dice" and attempt to continue growing at their normal rate, placing them at greater risk should further complications arise. Associate Professor Vicki Clifton discusses this fascinating growth mechanism and its possible implications for managing pregnancy.
Associate Professor Vicki Clifton is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and has been part of the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute, Department of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health since January 2008. She is also Director of Clinical Research at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide.
