Prime Minister Julia Gillard |
Gillard first female Prime Minister
The Hon. Julia Gillard successfully challenged and won the leadership to become Australia's first female Prime Minister.
Ms Gillard attended the University of Adelaide as a law/arts student in 1979. Still in her teens, she immediately became prominent in campus politics. She was President of the Adelaide University Union in 1981-82
before moving to Victoria, where she finished her law degree at the University of Melbourne in 1986.
Ms Gillard was elected to Parliament in 1998. Ms Gillard was the first female in Australian political history to become the Deputy Prime Minister in December 2007, and first foreign born woman to assume the acting-Prime Minister's role on 11 December 2007. Ms Gillard's numbers took her on the final step of her long march from the Deputy Prime Ministership to the top job — Australia's 27th Prime Minister.

'Choosy' women set high standards for sperm
Research has found the female reproductive system may be rejecting sperm it doesn't find good enough to create a pregnancy.
Lead researcher Professor Sarah Robertson, from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute, said tests discovered that females have an in-built quality control system, that assesses if the male partner is quality enough to invest her reproductive energy in.
"We actually think that some women are more choosy than others, if you like," Professor Robertson said.
"We have discovered that sperm doesn't just fertilize an egg," she said. "It actually contains signalling molecules that are responsible for activating immune changes in women so they can accept a foreign substance in the body — in this case, sperm — leading to conception and a healthy pregnancy."

General Information for Staff
SRE Survey 2: Last day TODAY
The last day of the SRE Survey 2 is today.
The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science & Research will place greater weight on the results of Survey 2 in determining the University's final funding allocation and it is therefore essential that all staff who are required to participate complete the survey online by COB tomorrow, Tuesday 29 June.
Staff who have been at a conference or visiting colleagues in relation to existing research should ensure they record this time in the appropriate research category (and not as time on leave). Learn more.
The SRE initiative will help the University secure major NEW FUNDING to be used exclusively in support of research.
For assistance, visit the SRE web site, call the SRE Helpline on 8313 1110 or email: sre@adelaide.edu.au.
Changes to access on Western Drive
To improve pedestrian safety during the construction period of the Hughes Plaza Learning Hub, vehicle access on Western Drive is being controlled between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, for the duration of the project. In the coming days a boom gate will be installed at Gate 20 on North Terrace and all vehicles will be escorted in and out of this area by University Security. A push button call system will be in place if vehicles are not seen by security, which will be diverted to a phone operated by a security officer.
Furthermore, as previously discussed, Western Drive roadway between the Hughes and Architecture buildings will be fully fenced off, permitting pedestrian access along the footpath only. To allow for a three metre pedestrian thoroughfare along Western Drive, the current footpath will be widened by moving the Art Gallery fence and building a temporary boardwalk.
We hope that this will minimise any pedestrian congestion in this area and thank you for being accommodating with the processes involved.
If you have any questions please contact Slavka Kovacevic on 33601.

Golden Jubilee Reunion
Call for 1960 graduates
Did you graduate - or know someone who graduated - from the University of Adelaide in 1960?
We are seeking 1960 graduates (and staff from that era) to take part in our Golden Jubilee Reunion, to be held at the University of Adelaide's North Terrace Campus on Friday, 15 October 2010.
The Reunion activities include a Commemoration Ceremony with senior staff, graduates, family and friends held in Bonython Hall at 10:30am, followed by a Graduate Luncheon (ticket required) in the Mortlock Chamber, South Australian State Library.
All University staff and students are welcome to attend the Commemoration Ceremony - tickets are not required.
The Golden Jubilee Reunion is a rare opportunity for graduates, family and friends to renew acquaintances and to celebrate their 50 years as a graduate of one of Australia's finest universities. It has proven to be a highlight of the Development and Alumni program and has made a huge contribution to the life story, fabric and rich tradition of the University of Adelaide.
The commemorations were initiated by the former Alumni Association in 1986 to coincide with the Bonython Hall Jubilee and the sesquicentenary of the State. This year marks the 25th consecutive Golden Jubilee Reunion.

Launch into ORBIT!
Have you had a message saying 'Neg Trans' appear where projection figures would normally display in the Project Summary section for your project in the ORBIT Project Reporting Module? This means that a negative income transaction has occurred against your project, which could cause its net available balance figure to be overstated if not addressed. Once the negative transaction has been accounted for, which can be done by anyone who has completed training and been granted Enter Projections access to the particular project, the projection figures will once again display.
For further assistance, contact the ORBIT helpdesk at: orbit@adelaide.edu.au or phone 8303 1391.

Winemaking - A Continuum between Art and Science?
Synopsis: Most winemakers sit somewhere on the continuum between being pure artists or scientists. Arguably the best wines are made by those that sit somewhere between the two; knowing where to and when to rely on their instincts and experience and when to reach for the lecture notes, text book or phone. Without going into a debate on what is science, it's fair to say that winemakers have different needs of the scientific and research community that fall into three main types. The "Oh my gosh something has gone wrong and I need help" type; the "I wonder what I can do to make this more efficient or understand it better" type, and the "blue sky - I never would have thought! - pure research but sometimes revolutionary" type. This lecture will discuss these ideas and give examples where all have been or are relevant to current Australian winemaking.
The inaugural A.R. Hickinbotham Lecture is named in honour of the former Roseworthy Lecturer who is regarded as the father of Australian oenology (winemaking) education. This Lecture recognises individuals that have had an impact on the wine industry and are world leaders in the field of oenology. Alan Robb Hickinbotham (1898-1959) joined the staff at Roseworthy College in 1929 as a Lecturer in Physical and Chemical Sciences. In 1936, he established the nation's first winemaking course which evolved into the University of Adelaide's world-renowned Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology which is now run at the Waite Campus. Alan R. Hickinbotham remained at Roseworthy College until 1948. His research and writing on winemaking under Australian conditions laid the foundation for a technically advanced Australian wine industry. The Hickinbotham family continued their father's passion for wine through their ongoing interests in viticulture and wine production. The National Wine Centre has recognised the Hickinbotham family by naming its major function hall after the family while the Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Science Laboratory was established at the University's Waite Campus in 1998 with the family's support.

Research Tuesdays
We're born like that
New research shows males and females approach risk-taking differently even in utero
Date/Time: Tuesday 13 July 2010, 5:30pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building, North Terrace Campus
FREE Public Seminar. All welcome.
Synopsis: An incredible new chapter has been revealed in the still unfolding story of human in-utero development. Research at the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute has shown the human fetus is able to deliberately slow and modify its development in response to a sub-optimal maternal environment, such as if the mother has a pre-existing disease or suffers extreme stress.
This increases its chances of survival. But remarkably, only female fetuses use the ability. Males instead "roll the dice" and attempt to continue growing at their normal rate, placing them at greater risk should further complications arise. Associate Professor Vicki Clifton discusses this fascinating growth mechanism and its possible implications for managing pregnancy.
Associate Professor Vicki Clifton is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and has been part of the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute, Department of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health since January 2008. She is also Director of Clinical Research at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide.
