Uni in the News

Vitamin use 'fuelled by industry'

The push for women to take vitamins through their pregnancy is increasingly coming from the supplement industry, said the University of Adelaide's Professor of Human Nutrition. Professor Maria Makrides, NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Laboratory Head - Applied Nutrition, WCHRI, said there was little scientific evidence to support taking iron or iodine supplements during or ahead of pregnancy, while both were promoted as beneficial for mums-to-be. "When studies have been done where women take (iron) supplements it does not change the outcome of their pregnancy or the development of the child," Professor Makrides said. It was common for pregnant women to record low iron levels, but this could be a temporary "adaption rather than a true iron deficiency" as normal levels usually returned post-birth. The University of Adelaide is now recruiting 1,600 women for the PINK trial to look for any benefit from taking iodine supplements during pregnancy.

General Information for Staff

Changes to the Division of the DVC&VP(A)

In March 2010, the Vice-Chancellor and President approved a proposal to restructure Student Services and the Office of the DVC&VP(A). The changes to the Division are designed to reflect the future priorities of the University as a result of changes to government policies, the increasingly competitive markets for prospective students, the development of the Student Learning Hub, the need to achieve some improvements in service delivery from a realignment of responsibilities, and the need to develop new capabilities to manage activities in a more challenging environment.

Changes to the Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic), effective 1 July 2010, are as follows:

  1. The International Office will report to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International).
  2. A new branch will be established in the Division called Strategy, Planning and Recruitment, and consist of the following units:
    a. Strategy and Planning
    b. Access and Participation
    c. Prospective Students Office
  3. The following units in Student Services will be grouped in a branch called Student Services and Administration:
    a. Student Centre
    b. Student Support
    c. Student Administration
  4. The Division's finance unit will join Major Projects and further capabilities to support strategic partnering and business analysis associated with academic activities will be added to a unit called Major Projects and Development.

The Division's organisational chart is available at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/46/.

Quitting Smoking: Where do I start?

An important part of the University's commitment to a Smoke Free Campus is providing support to staff and students who would like to quit smoking.

If you are interested in more information about quitting and the support available from the University, come along to a FREE one hour information session jointly presented by staff from Quit SA and Corporate Health Group (the University's Employee Assistance Program and Quit Support Program provider). This very practical session will provide a brief overview of the issues related to smoking, suggest ways to quit and provide information about the support options available through the University including nicotine replacement therapy.

Date: Thursday 29 July 2010, 1:00pm
Venue: Eclipse Room, Level 4, Union House, North Terrace Campus

CBS Project Update

The CBS Project continues on schedule in preparation for Go-Live on Monday, 16 August 2010. To get ready for Go-Live – only 20 working days away – read on!

Training: Training is essential for your successful transition to the new system. To see what training is available to you, including recommended sessions and how to book, visit CBS Project Training.

Preparing for Go-Live: Prior to Go-Live there is a 'Cutover' or system downtime period, when the upgrade from the old to the new systems and data occurs. Cutover will last for 10 calendar days, from Friday 6 August through to Monday 16 August.

Cutover means *'read only' access to a number of systems, and changes in processing deadlines. Click here for Student Administration Services or here for Human Resources/Payroll impacts and help.

CBS Project Quick links:

  • Click here for the current project newsletter
  • Click here for detailed project information and contacts

* "Read only" means that you can use PeopleSoft to view information, run inquiries and reports but not add or update data. Examples of affected systems include PeopleSoft and Access Adelaide. Other systems (e.g. MyUni, Syllabus Plus, ORBIT, Data Warehouse) will be available but will not receive any updates from the PeopleSoft system until Go-Live.

New General Disposal Schedule for University Records Now Applies!

On 8 June, the State Records Council of SA approved General Disposal Schedule No 24 for all South Australian Universities. This action revokes the previous University of Adelaide Records Disposal Schedules 2001[1] and 2001[2].

Disposal Schedules stipulate minimum retention periods for official University records. All staff are reminded that official records must not be destroyed without approval from University Archives, Records & Collections. Fines of up to $10,000 or 2 years imprisonment can apply to individuals for the unauthorised destruction of records.

All University policies and procedures referring to the revoked schedules should be reviewed to ensure that details are amended and retention periods are in line with the new GDS24.

Information about the disposal of records and a copy of the schedule is available at:
www.adelaide.edu.au/records/rmo/disposal_schedule/.

For assistance with record disposal issues, contact Sue Coppin on ext 35184 or: sue.coppin@adelaide.edu.au.

Introducing the new University Risk Register

The University has a new resource to support operational risk management practices across all sections of the University - the University Risk Register (URR). The URR is a simple web based tool that facilitates the identification and assessment of risk, monitoring and review of risks, and standardised reporting of risks. It will enable individual areas to build a risk profile over time and will also allow the University, as an organisation, to report to those internal committees, auditors and external stakeholders seeking assurance that risks are being managed.

The URR has been developed to facilitate the management of operational risks. These are the risks that arise from the day-to-day work of the University, or the business or project related risks associated with individual faculties, schools or centralised areas. For example:

  • Feasibility of a project or field activity
  • Risks associated if business is interrupted
  • The impact of growth in student demand
  • Proposals for funding
  • Risks associated with ageing infrastructure

Please note: The URR does not replace other registers such as RMSS (used for Health & Safety and Legal Compliance); instead it acts as an adjunct to these systems to support operational risks. The reporting and managing of risks associated with health and safety remains the responsibility of the HR Branch, Health, Safety & Wellbeing team and University Health & Safety Committee, while any risks of a specific academic nature rest with the University's Academic Board.

The URR is available from the University's Intranet. To find the register, click HERE, or go to Internet Explorer's "Favorites" and follow LIFE IMPACT – THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE, Risk Management and University Risk Register.

The URR allows any staff member to Log a Risk. In logging a risk, staff are asked to describe the risk or concern they have and identify where the risk exists. Determining who needs access to use the URR will be up to the local area (whether the Faculty, School, Division or Branch) to decide. All users will require some basic training which will initially be provided by the Manager Risk Services.

If you are interested in learning more about the URR, or discussing your operational risk management issues please contact Anne Hill (Manager Risk Services) in Legal & Risk on 8303 4603 or email: anne.hill@adelaide.edu.au.

"The course of true love never did run smooth"

Lysander loves Hermia. Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius. Demetrius used to love Helena... but now loves Hermia. So begins Shakespeare's classic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The romantic intrigues of these young lovers are confused and complicated as they flee into the forest inhabited by Oberon, King of the Fairies, Titania his Queen, and their mischievous servant, Puck. Add into the mix a group of bumbling mechanicals rehearsing a play and you have a hilarious tale of love, jealousy, magic and dreams.

Brought to the stage by Cassandra Backler and the University of Adelaide's Theatre Guild with a cast of young, enthusiastic student actors, A Midsummer Night's Dream promises to be an evening of magic and mayhem. Leave your fears at the door and enter a world of your dreams!

Using Voice Tools in Teaching

Online Learning at the CLPD has been running a well received seminar series called "Strategies for Online Learning". Most of the seminars have been face-to-face. Now we are going to do something a little different. The next event in the series "Using Voice" is going to be a webinar.

That is, we are going to do it totally online using the Wimba Virtual Classroom software. You will be able to attend this live event from your own desk ... that will make attendance easier don't you think? Please note it will also be recorded for people to revisit should they not be able to attend at the time but please try to attend as we value your contribution.

We will overview Wimba Voice Tools which have recently been integrated into MyUni. The voice tools include Voice Presenter, Voice Boards, Voice Email and Podcasts as well as the Wimba Classroom and Pronto (an instant messaging tool). The content will focus on the integration of voice tools into a blended or fully online curriculum as well as facilitation/moderation techniques and strategies. The emphasis will not be technical, nor hands on, and a discrete workshop in a computer lab may be required as follow up to this webinar. Time will also be given to introduce participants to the role and power of podcasting.

Date: Thursday 22 July 2010, 11:00am - 2:00pm
Venue: Online Classroom: Access details will be sent to registered participants prior to the seminar.

To book for the seminar go to the University Course Booking System.
