Uni in the News
High yield expected from cash for crop research
Redrawing the battlelines of university research so as to remain competitive and to overcome modern challenges has meant thinking even smarter. The University of Adelaide's Waite Research Institute, led by Professor Roger Leigh, has been allocated $5 million to help it gear up for what the Director calls "the biggest challenge we face", world hunger.
Professor Leigh knows the imperative is to come up with large ideas, and that means bringing "research together in bigger and more collaborative projects than we have previously. "This is a new opportunity to work across disciplinary boundaries such as plant biology, soil science and plant physiology," he said.
The Institute aims to ensure profitable and productive agriculture in the face of climate change, increased costs of energy, declining land and water resources, urbanisation and environmental degradation.

Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions
The History Discipline has been awarded one of its largest funding grants on record for a research project investigating mass emotions and their influence on historical change in Australia.
Professor David Lemmings from the School of History and Politics has won approximately $3.5 million as part of a new national ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions.
The Australian Research Council has pledged $24.25 million for the Centre, which will be headquartered at the University of Western Australia, but involving chief investigators from other Australian and international universities, including Adelaide. Professor Lemmings is one of four Program Leaders under the grant.
It is anticipated the research will have major implications for Australia's heritage, creative arts, social and cultural policy.
Professor Lemmings' research will look at mass emotions and historical change in medieval and early modern Europe. The team hopes to involve SA creative industries in its project.
The ARC grant is over seven years, from 2011-2017.
The University of Adelaide is also a key partner in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Tera-Scale, to be headquartered at the University of Melbourne, with funding of $25.2 million over seven years.

Launch into ORBIT!
CBS HR Systems Upgrade - ORBIT Impact During HR System Changeover Period
As ORBIT sources a significant amount of its core data from the PeopleSoft HR system, the ORBIT system will not be fully available during the period of changeover to the new HR system.
Please take note of the following significant dates during the changeover period:
ORBIT is Read Only with Static Data - 5:00pm, Friday 6 August until midnight, Wednesday 11 August
The data presented within ORBIT during this period will be that as at COB 6 August.
Please refrain from keying any data into the ORBIT system during this period, as any data entered will be lost in the upgrade process. This includes the entry of projections, general details, expenditure limits, comments and documents in the Project Reporting Module and entry of Visiting Scholar and Seminar data in the Researcher Profiles Module.
ORBIT Outage - 12 August until midnight, Sunday 15 August
All ORBIT Modules will be offline and unavailable during this period.
ORBIT Available - Monday 16 August
The ORBIT system is scheduled to become fully available again in line with the new HR system Go-Live. ORBIT data entry can again recommence.
Special Note - Project Reporting Module
The introduction of the new HR system has meant the way in which salary and stipend commitments are calculated has changed. The salary and stipend projection amounts displayed as at Go-Live are still calculated using the current algorithm and are for the Friday 13 August pay run. Commitments data using the new algorithm is expected to become available in ORBIT on Thursday 26 August.
You may possibly notice some differences in projection figures arising from this change in calculation logic. Please refer to the ORBIT Help for the Project Reporting Module for further detail on this calculation.
For further assistance, contact the ORBIT helpdesk at: orbit@adelaide.edu.au or phone 8303 1391.

"The course of true love never did run smooth"
Lysander loves Hermia. Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius. Demetrius used to love Helena... but now loves Hermia. So begins Shakespeare's classic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. The romantic intrigues of these young lovers are confused and complicated as they flee into the forest inhabited by Oberon, King of the Fairies, Titania his Queen, and their mischievous servant, Puck. Add into the mix a group of bumbling mechanicals rehearsing a play and you have a hilarious tale of love, jealousy, magic and dreams.
Brought to the stage by Cassandra Backler and the University of Adelaide's Theatre Guild with a cast of young, enthusiastic student actors, A Midsummer Night's Dream promises to be an evening of magic and mayhem. Leave your fears at the door and enter a world of your dreams!
