Annual Florey Lecture featuring Baroness Susan Greenfield

The human brain is now wired for change. According to University of Adelaide 2010 Florey Lecture speaker and world-leading neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield, the human brain is in for a roller coaster ride this century. On Friday 3 September, Baroness Greenfield will present her thoughts on how technology, neuroscientific advances and designer drugs are modifying our brains in an unprecedented way.
Regarded as one of the most influential brain experts in the world, Baroness Greenfield will be in Adelaide to help celebrate the University of Adelaide Medical School's 125th anniversary. Her public lecture in Bonython Hall will examine the impact of screen technologies on young brains, the effect of drugs and strong sensory messages on the brain, and how nanotechnology will soon provide early-warning signs of brain malfunction.

For further details visit: www.adelaide.edu.au/student/graduations/gradceremony_dates/.

If you would like to attend, please notify the Graduations Office by completing the online form available on the Graduations website in the Staff Information section: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/sas/grad_tickets/.

Ticket requests must be lodged with the Graduations Office no later than Tuesday 17 August 2010.

Waste and Recycling: First Reverse Vending Machine on Campus

On 28 July, the University of Adelaide and Adelaide University Union launched the first reverse vending machine on a campus in South Australia and the first in Adelaide's CBD. This AUU initiative to install the Envirobank machine will form part of the University's approach to Waste and Recycling.

Located on the Ground Floor of Union House, the machine has been installed in line with the University's target to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Staff and students will be able to place empty cans or plastic bottles in the Envirobank machine for an opportunity to win a prize such as a movie ticket.

All funds collected via the container deposit refund will assist in offsetting the AUU's carbon footprint – providing an even greater environmental benefit.

CBS Project Update

Go-Live is almost upon us – 5 working days to go! On Monday 16 August, the University will have the Core Business System (CBS), supporting services delivered by Human Resources, Payroll and Student Administration.

Systems Are Now Down! We are now in the Cutover Period when the upgrade from PeopleSoft v7.6 to PeopleSoft v9.0 systems occurs. Click here for details.

Normal services for these systems will return from start-of-business on Monday 16 August. Note that access to the PeopleSoft Finance System is not affected.

What to do during system downtime? For current users of PeopleSoft v7.6, until Monday 16 August:

Launch into ORBIT!

CBS HR Systems Upgrade - ORBIT Impact During HR System Changeover Period

As ORBIT sources a significant amount of its core data from the PeopleSoft HR system, the ORBIT system will not be fully available during the period of changeover to the new HR system.

Please take note of the following significant dates during the changeover period:

ORBIT is Read Only with Static Data - now until midnight, Wednesday 11 August

The data presented within ORBIT during this period will be that as at COB 6 August.
Please refrain from keying any data into the ORBIT system during this period, as any data entered will be lost in the upgrade process. This includes the entry of projections, general details, expenditure limits, comments and documents in the Project Reporting Module and entry of Visiting Scholar and Seminar data in the Researcher Profiles Module.

ORBIT Outage - 12 August until midnight, Sunday 15 August

All ORBIT Modules will be offline and unavailable during this period.

ORBIT Available - Monday 16 August

The ORBIT system is scheduled to become fully available again in line with the new HR system Go-Live. ORBIT data entry can again recommence.

Special Note - Project Reporting Module

The introduction of the new HR system has meant the way in which salary and stipend commitments are calculated has changed. The salary and stipend projection amounts displayed as at Go-Live are still calculated using the current algorithm and are for the Friday 13 August pay run. Commitments data using the new algorithm is expected to become available in ORBIT on Thursday 26 August.

You may possibly notice some differences in projection figures arising from this change in calculation logic. Please refer to the ORBIT Help for the Project Reporting Module for further detail on this calculation.

For further assistance, contact the ORBIT helpdesk at: orbit@adelaide.edu.au or phone 8303 1391.

Revised Risk Management Handbook

The Risk Management Handbook has recently been updated and revised in line with the new International Standard which came into effect in November 2009. This standard, AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management – Principles and guidelines, supersedes, but incorporates most of AS/NZS 4360:2004 Risk Management, which has guided risk management in Australia in recent years.

The Risk Management Handbook provides a guide to the principles, techniques and tools available to risk management. The Handbook is linked to the Risk Management Policy which formally affirms the University's commitment to risk management. The Handbook also forms part of the University's Risk Management Framework which seeks to proactively support and assist the University and its personnel to more confidently assess opportunities and manage risks that may otherwise adversely impact on the University's activities or objectives.

The Handbook has been designed to assist staff to understand and/or use the risk management process with confidence, and to encourage a consistent and comprehensive approach to managing risk across the whole University. The risk management process applies equally to risks that arise at an enterprise or strategic level, at an operational or day-to-day business level or at a project or specific activity level.

The revised Handbook is available on the Policies Directory at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/2965/.

For further information contact Anne Hill (Manager Risk Services) on 8303 4603 or by email: anne.hill@adelaide.edu.au.
