How menstrual cycles change the brain's processes
Experts say period pain may change the way women's brains work and how they deal with aches throughout the body, even when they are not experiencing the monthly cramps that often accompany the menstrual cycle.
Taiwanese research published in PAIN journal found a natural system that works in a woman's brain to block pain changes when she is menstruating. The brain can stop blocking some pain altogether, following continual menstrual aches.
University of Adelaide Professor of Clinical Pharmacology Professor Paul Rolan, Senior Consultant at the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Pain Management Unit, said that repeated cycles of pain made people more sensitive towards aches.
"This study shows very small changes in the way the brain processes the way you feel about pain," he said. "This shows there are reasons we can't control why we experience pain."
