Setting up SafeAssign: Instructors

  • SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention service integrated into our learning management system, MyUni. This service helps teachers detect text that is copied from other sources and may not be referenced or acknowledged appropriately. SafeAssign can be used by students to assist them in evidenced-based writing and proper attribution of content from other sources.

Until now you may have been using Turnitin for this purpose; we will discontinue the use of Turnitin after December 2010. SafeAssign has the advantage of being fully integrated into MyUni. Commencing first semester 2010, all new courses in MyUni will have SafeAssign automatically activated and be available for use. All courses rolled over from 2009 to 2010 need to have the SafeAssign feature manually activated so as to be available for use.

  • This tutorial will walk you through how to activate SafeAssign in your course and have it ready for use.

  • SafeAssignments appear in courses as a new content type and can be added to any course content area. SafeAssignments function like the existing Assignment content type with the added layer of a plagiarism detection check once papers are submitted. There are two types of SafeAssign Assignment tasks. This is the DRAFT VERSION i.e. it will allow a student to submit once and will check their paper and generate a SafeAssign Report but will not store it in the Institutional Database. The Final Version SafeAssignment is handled in the next lesson

Instructors have the choice to use the Draft Version option of SafeAssign before asking students to submit a Final SafeAssignment. The advantage of setting up two versions (i.e. a Draft and a Final) SafeAssign Assignment task is that the draft version is formative and enhances learning. It helps students identify any problems and fix them before final submission.

Please note that SafeAssignments are different from Assignments and there is no connection between the content types. It is not possible to make an existing Assignment a SafeAssignment without starting from the beginning. Like regular Assignments, however, SafeAssignments are integrated with the Gradebook in MyUni.
