• The final Ranked Conference List for ERA 2010 is only applicable to some disciplines. It contains ERA ID, Conference Title and acronym, FoR code/s and Rank.

Translating Research Into Practice (TRIP) is a new early-to-mid career fellowship scheme to support the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

The Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative (VNI) is a $63 million health research fund that supports research into Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) conducted by Victorian scientists in collaboration with national and international colleagues. Established in 2005 with funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (DIIRD), the VNI was incorporated as a Pty Ltd in November 2006.

The VNI is now pleased to announce that it will be offering project funding in conjunction with the 2010 NHMRC Project Grant funding round. Researchers applying to NHMRC will be able to pre-select if they would like their application to be automatically considered by the VNI if they are unsuccessful in receiving funding from NHMRC.

About the Future Fellowship Scheme: The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers from Australia and abroad, and encourages proposals from researchers working in areas of national priority that can demonstrate a capacity to build collaboration across industry, research institutions or with other disciplines.

Cancer Australia and their funding partners – beyondblue, CanTeen, Cancer Council New South Wales, Cancer Council Tasmania, Cure Cancer Australia Foundation, Leukaemia Foundation, Meat and Livestock Australia, the National Centre for Gynaecological Cancers, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the National Lung Cancer Program, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia – are inviting applications for Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Grants to commence in 2011.

The Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme is an annual national research project grant scheme which funds cancer research in identified priority areas to help reduce the impact of cancer in the community and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. The scheme brings together funders of cancer research to support cancer research project grants in identified project areas. Two types of priority-driven project grant are offered through the scheme:

• Priority-driven Standard Project Grant: Five categories of grant from one to five years in duration, and with total funding from $50,000 - $750,000 (GST exclusive).
• Priority-driven Young Investigator Project Grant: one year grant of $90,000 (GST exclusive).

Priority-driven Young Investigator Project Grants are being offered to give innovative, high-achieving early career researchers working in all areas of cancer, the support they need to pursue potential breakthrough research.

Priority-driven Standard Project Grants are being offered to fund research that deals with practice and policy priorities nationally. These grants are intended to fund research which will improve outcomes for people affected by cancer and the priority driven nature of the research scheme complements investigator-initiated grant schemes.

The Australian Government's Anti-Doping Research Program offers funding for new research to improve the analytical capability for detecting banned substances and doping agents taken by athletes and to help lead to practical doping deterrence strategies.

The Department of Health and Ageing is seeking research proposals for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 Anti-Doping Research Program funding rounds in the areas of:

• Detection of gene doping and gene manipulation.
• Detection of novel doping threats.
• Improving current detection methodologies.
• Improving deterrence by understanding causes of doping behaviour and evaluating anti-doping interventions.

Proposals outside these priority areas are also invited if they demonstrate a very strong contribution to the aims of the Anti-Doping Research Program and excellent value for money.

The objective of the Foundation is to support medical research of benefit to Veterans and their families, applications must be directed to the treatment of specific veteran groups or the military. Applications are called for the following areas of research:

• Cardiovascular disease with an emphasis on prevention, early detection and clinical management.
• Cancer with an emphasis on prevention and prostate cancer.
• Clinical evaluation of post traumatic stress disorder.

The ADRF invites applications for grants from clinicians and trained researchers interested in undertaking a dental research project. The Directors are especially interested in research that bears directly on the clinical practice of dentistry. Applicants from general or specialist dental practice are encouraged to seek research support. In recent years grants have averaged around $5,000 and seldom exceeded $10,000. The Foundation will not support requests for salaries, high cost items of equipment or institutional overheads.

The top-ranked project each year automatically gains access to the Australian Dental Industry Association Research Award. This Award offers an additional $5,000 to the Principal Applicant for the grant, either for a new project or for an extension of the scope of the winning one.

The G4 Small Grants Program aims to be responsive to community needs and to support youth focussed and driven strategies across a range of areas. The G4 Small Grants Program will support youth focussed initiatives. The current priority areas for the G4 Small Grants Program include but are not limited to:

• Environmental education targeting and involving young people aged 12-25 years
• Youth-driven events
• Activities and initiatives addressing the health and wellbeing needs of young people

Only one application can be considered per applicant. The Sidney Myer Fund continues to fund the arts, and seeks to play a critical role in upholding the integrity of the arts community within Australia by supporting artistic initiatives that often fall outside other funding agendas. Current priority areas in the Arts and Humanities Small Grants Program are as follows:

• To build capacity of the individual through ensuring that indigenous and non-indigenous artists gain access to professional training, development and mentoring

Marine mammals interact with humans in a diverse manner. To identify and effectively manage the interactions that might require some alteration to human activities the Australian Government requires:

• an understanding of the status of the marine mammal species (population structure, distribution, abundance and trend)
• the nature and extent of the interaction, and
• the options for, and likely effectiveness of, mitigation strategies

Proposals are sought that deliver the highest quality science outcomes to address the most pressing marine mammal management needs. Priority will be given to those proposals that address the research priorities. An AMMC Grant is for a project's special requirements and in addition to the basic facilities provided by the researcher's own organisation. The Marine National Facility Steering Committee calls for applications for sea time annually and encourages new users of the RV Southern Surveyor to apply. It also encourages applications for national and international collaborative projects and projects covering more than one year.

Australian marine researchers are invited to submit applications to use RV Southern Surveyor during the period July 2011 to June 2012. Southern Surveyor is equipped to support research in the following general areas:

• Physical, chemical and biological oceanography;

The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), is to stimulate innovative research that will determine:

• how alcohol disrupts gut-liver-brain physiological communications, and
• how these alterations contribute to the development and exacerbation of alcohol-associated diseases.

These investigations are expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms by which alcohol impairs homeostatic functions at both organ and systemic levels and initiates/promotes tissue injury.

The Leukemia Research Foundation dedicates funds to support research related to leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes. The goal of the Hollis Brownstein Research Grants Program is to support new investigators; preference will be given to applicants demonstrating new lines of investigation.

The Leukemia Research Foundation is currently funding New Investigators only. New Investigator research grants are for a period of one year for up to $100,000. The Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative is seeking innovative ideas for diagnostics in the developing world. $30 million in funding is available for Phase I of a new grant program to create technologies and components that can be used to assess multiple conditions and pathogens at the point of care in a variety of settings.

Specifically, we seek to create a new class of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics that will be easy to use, low cost and otherwise appropriate so that these new tools achieve significant impact and rapid uptake in resource-poor settings.

To enable investigators throughout the world to gain experience in defining objectives and testing hypotheses in preparation for major grant applications to corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies. There is a significant public health need to improve the outcome of treatments of substance use disorders (SUDs). SUDs are often associated with cognitive changes that may negatively impact drug abuse treatment outcomes. The purpose of this FOA is to solicit clinical research project applications that design and/or develop cognitive remediation strategies that enhance the outcome of SUD treatments.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to commit approximately $3,000,000 in total costs (Direct plus Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs) in Fiscal Year 2010 to fund 5 to 6 new grants in response to this FOA and the parallel FOA RFA-DA-10-007. An applicant may request a project period of up to 5 years with direct costs of less than $500,000 per year.

The Elva Knight Research Grant provides up to US$10,000 for research in reading and literacy.

Contingent upon available funds in any given year, as many as four grants may be awarded. Projects should be completed within 2 years and may be carried out using any research method or approach so long as the focus of the project is on research in reading or literacy. Activities such as developing new programs or instructional materials are not eligible for funding except to the extent that these activities are necessary procedures for the conduct of the research.

Each year, it is expected that at least one grant will be awarded to a researcher outside the United States and Canada and that one grant will be awarded to a teacher-initiated research project subject to being of high quality.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities is now pleased to call for applications for the second round of the International Science Linkages - Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme, funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to support international collaborative research activities in the humanities and creative arts.

The International Science Linkages (ISL) Programme aims to facilitate and support research cooperation between Australian researchers and leading counterparts overseas. The ISL-HCA Programme will provide targeted support in order to:

• promote access and participation for Australian humanities and creative arts researchers in strategically focused, leading edge, international research; and
• increase strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.

The Geoscience Education (GeoEd) Program is part of a portfolio of programs within the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) that seeks to increase public understanding of Earth system science and foster recruitment, training and retention of a diverse and skilled geoscience workforce for the future. The program achieves these goals by supporting innovative or transformative projects that improve the quality and effectiveness of formal and informal geoscience education at all educational levels, increase the number of students pursuing geoscience education and career paths, broaden participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in the geosciences, and promote public engagement in Earth system science.

In FY 2010 and FY 2012, the GeoEd program invites proposals in four main areas:

• advancing public Earth system science literacy, particularly through strengthening geoscience education in grades K-14 and informal education settings;
• fostering development and training of the diverse scientific and technical workforce required for 21st century geoscience careers;
• utilizing modern technologies to facilitate and increase access to geoscience education and/or develop innovative approaches for using geoscience research activities and data for educational purposes; and
• establishing regional networks and alliances that bring together scientists, formal and informal science educators, as well as other stakeholders, in support of improving Earth system science education and broadening participation in the geosciences.

Proposals focused on basic research that might catalyze discovery and innovation at the frontiers of geoscience learning, education, and evaluation will be considered by the GeoEd Program, but are not viewed as a priority in this solicitation. However, the GeoEd Program expects all proposed project activities to be grounded in current understanding of how students learn and effective STEM education practices. Proposals must include an appropriate evaluation or assessment plan that will help to document project effectiveness and/or impact. The GeoEd Program accepts proposals for pilot or proof-of-concept projects (Track 1) and integrative collaborations (Track 2), as well as for conferences or workshops related to the mission of the program.

The PADI Foundation encourages and supports underwater science, environmental projects, and education.

The Foundation will fund and assist worthwhile projects that will enrich mankind's understanding of the aquatic environment and encourage sensitivity to and protection of the delicate ecological balance of underwater life. The Foundation will also fund worthwhile projects to increase understanding of sport diving physics and physiology that will benefit the general diving public and add to the scientific understanding of man's relationship and ability to survive in the underwater environment.

In 2010, the Foundation expects to award a total of approximately $180,000 and will consider proposals with budgets up to $20,000 although the average for proposals will be on the order of $5,000 to $10,000. The Foundation will not fund overhead or other indirect expenses.

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian professional scientists, including early career researchers, to visit Europe between 1 July 2010 and 31 March 2011 to collaborate with European researchers. Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered. The applicant must be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident, living in Australia at the time of submitting the grant application. Support will not be given when the primary purpose of the visit is to attend a conference.

Preference will be given to visits which are short-term and highly-focused. The grant scheme is not to supplement or extend either study or sabbatical leave that is being conducted overseas.

Successful applicants may receive from the Academy a grant-in-aid of up to $10,500. This is based on a contribution towards travel between Australia and the host institution(s) up to a maximum of $2,500, and a living allowance of up to a maximum of $200 per day for a period between 14 days and 40 days (maximum of $8,000). Please note that the full amount applied for may not always be awarded.

The duration of the visit must be for a minimum of 14 days and a maximum of 40 days. The program does not provide funds for bench fees, managerial, insurance or visa costs.

The purpose of the Australian Orthopaedic Research Fellowship is to promote research into clinical orthopaedics and basic science relevant to the practice of orthopaedics. Applicants will be required:

The scheme of 1851 Research Fellowships is intended to give a few PhD level scientists or engineers of outstanding promise the opportunity for conducting research for a further period.  Awarded for three years, they provide an exceptional opportunity for PhD graduates to pursue further research at the highest level. Approximately eight awards are made each year.

The Fellowships are open to candidates in any of the physical or biological sciences, in mathematics, in applied science, or in any branch of engineering. Candidates in science subjects should normally have recently obtained their PhD degree, or be in the final stages of their PhD studies. Those offering engineering do not have to be in possession of a PhD, but must be of at least PhD standard.

Applications from qualified engineering researchers are particularly encouraged. A candidate must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth, or of the Republics of Ireland or Pakistan. The Scheme has been established to select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at
UK research institutions for a period of two years. The Scheme covers researchers in all disciplines covered by the three academies – natural and social sciences, engineering and humanities. The Newton International Fellowship scheme will select the very best early stage postdoctoral researchers from all over the world, and offer support for two years at UK research institutions. The long-term aim of the scheme is to build a global pool of research leaders and encourage long-term international collaboration with the UK.

Fellowships are tenable for a period of two years. Funding will consist of £24,000 per annum for subsistence costs, and up to £8,000 per annum research expenses, as well as a one-off payment of up to £2,000 for relocation expenses.

The Endeavour Research Fellowships for Indigenous Australians provide financial support for Indigenous postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research (4-6 months), in any field of study. Postdoctoral fellowships provide two years of funding to support ambitious, synthetic research on any aspect of evolutionary biology and relevant disciplines. Annual stipends will be $39,000 with $5,000 in research expenses, plus medical and dental coverage. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications to develop innovative methods for membrane protein production so that the rate of membrane protein structure determination may be enhanced. Methods development for expression, solubilization, stabilization, purification, characterization, crystallization, and isotopic labeling of membrane proteins to enable the determination of their structures by electron microscopic, x-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, and other biophysical techniques are emphasized.

In order to support scholarship in the field of British art and architectural history and to disseminate knowledge through publications, exhibitions and education, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of fellowships and grants. Please note, however, that the Centre’s remit does not cover contemporary fine arts, archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts.

Research Support Grants of up to £3,000 is offered to assist with travel, subsistence and other research costs, such as photography. They are offered to scholars already engaged in research involving the study of British art or architectural history. Preproposals for research projects addressing clinical aspects of exotic and wild birds, including diagnostic tests, drug doses, practice management, and conservation, are now being accepted for consideration for funding by the Association of Avian Veterinarians. The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to attract qualified and promising health scientists, to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training, and to assist individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position.

JDRF envisions the 3-year award term as a period in which fellows will receive critical research training that will position them to work at the leading edge of their chosen field. An additional, optional 1-year “transition” award will further assist fellows to proceed to independent faculty or research appointments and will serve as a bridge between the fellowship and independent competitive research funding.

During the fellowship phase, the applicant is required to work with a sponsor who can provide a training environment conducive to beginning a career in diabetes-relevant research.

The fellowships are intended for those in a relatively early stage of their career. At the time of activating the award, the applicant must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) from an accredited institution and must not be simultaneously serving an internship or residency and will have no more than 5 years before the fellowship. Funding is available up to $90,000 across 3 years.

The JDRF Early Career Patient-Oriented Diabetes Research Award will provide crucial support to investigators who plan to pursue a career in diabetes-related clinical investigation. These prestigious awards are made in the later stages of training and include the ability for recipients to transition to independent faculty or research appointments. The award has a five-year term.

The successful candidate will have an MD or MD-PhD, hold an appointment or joint appointment in a subspecialty of clinical medicine, and conduct human clinical research. In exceptional circumstances, non-MD candidates will be considered if their work is likely to contribute significantly to a clinical outcome. The candidate must hold an appointment or joint appointment in a clinical department.

For the purposes of this award, clinical research is defined as research conducted with human subjects for which the investigator directly interacts with the subjects. Areas of relevant research can include (but are not limited to):

• mechanisms of human disease;
• therapeutic interventions;
• clinical trials;
• the development of new technologies.

There are no citizenship requirements for this program. Research may be conducted at foreign and domestic, for-profit and non-profit, and public and private organizations-such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government.

Awards are in the amount of up to USD 150,000 total costs per year, including indirect costs.

Cancer Council SA (CCSA) sets aside limited funds each year to support visits by national or international experts who can add value to cancer control in South Australia.

A condition of the award is that it must be used during the calendar year ending 31 December 2010.

Any South Australian agency or department actively involved in cancer research, caring for people affected by cancer, or community education about cancer, may apply to CCSA for a grant-in-aid to bring an appropriate 'distinguished visitor' to South Australia.
