The aim of the small grants program is to provide financial assistance to organisations planning projects that meet the Foundation's objects. The program is designed to provide fast trunaround time and quick outcomes.

Small grants can be applied for at any time, and decision making takes approximately eight weeks.No organisation is excluded from applying for a small grant. Preference will, however, be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input. We welcome joint applications from more than one organisation, although the application needs to be auspiced by a single incorporated organisation.

Retina Australia is a not-for-profit organization which acts in the interest of those affected by inherited retinal degenerations. In addition to its other activities, Retina Australia directs funds to scientific/medical research relevant to the causes, treatment, prevention or cure of retinal dystrophies.

Priority will be given to studies of retinitis pigmentosa and other inherited retinal diseases and, to the extent that available funds permit, to age-related macular degeneration. The research may be basic or applied. Research into diabetic retinopathy is not funded by Retina Australia, nor is research into behavioural and welfare aspects of retinal dystrophy.

Funds will not normally be granted for more than one year, and will not normally exceed $40,000.

Applications for the 2010 Ramaciotti Awards are now open.

• The Ramaciotti Establishment and Equipment Grants: The Ramaciotti Establishment and Equipment Grants honour groups or individuals in universities, public hospitals or institutes undertaking biomedical research. Establishment grants provide financial support for emerging researchers, while equipment grants go towards the purchase of a major piece of equipment. Perpetual is pleased to announce that in 2010 the Ramaciotti Establishment and Equipment grants have increased from $50,000 to $75,000.
• Ramaciotti Medal for Biomedical Research: The Ramaciotti Medal is an annual award of $50,000. The Medal honours an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to clinical or biomedical research, or the way in which healthcare is delivered.

The Canine Research Foundation is seeking applications for grants for research to commence in the year 2011.  The Foundation is an independent public trust for the purposes of funding research directed at improving canine health, which it does through a program of annual research grants.

Grants may be made by the Foundation for research projects relating to canine health where the research is conducted by an Australian university. Grants per project will normally be in the order of $5,000-15,000 in any one year.  Projects may extend beyond one year but funding each year will be dependent upon satisfactory progress as given in interim reports.  Funds will be available as arranged through the university.

The aim of the RM Gibson Research Fund is to support beginning researchers further their careers in gerontological research. There are up to three grants of
approximately $5-6000 each, to a total of $15,000, which will be made to members of the Association for the purpose of medical scientific research.

Applicants must be members of the Australian Association of Gerontology at the time of applying for a grant. Intending applicants who are not members should
apply for membership immediately. The grants are intended to support new researchers at the beginning or in the first five years of their careers, but there is no age limit.

The PCFA is dedicated to funding research into the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. Their commitment to provide seed funding to the best prostate cancer research in the country has, once again, the strong support of Movember.

The overall goals of the PCFA Research Program are:

• To encourage young investigators to undertake research into prostate cancer, and to support those investigators as they mature toward independent scientists.
• To stimulate senior scientists, not working in the field of prostate cancer, to bring innovative proposals to the PCFA; funding will be provided to obtain the preliminary data needed for NHMRC or other grant submissions.

The Rental Bond Board Grants Program provides grants or loans to organisations providing residential rental accommodation, or conducting research into the relationship of landlords and tenants.

Applications for funding are selected on the basis that the proposal is consistent with the provisions of the Landlord and Tenant (Rental Bonds) Act 1977. In particular, the proposal must be for a project which involves one or more of the following:

• a scheme for the provision of residential accommodation for rental purposes;
• research into matters relevant to the relationship of landlord and tenant;

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

• Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated

Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) and the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP), National Institutes of Health, invites exploratory pilot/feasibility study and small clinical trial (R21) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to test novel home or family based interventions for the prevention or management of overweight in infancy and early childhood. Tested interventions can use behavioral (including dietary and physical activity), environmental, or other relevant approaches. 

Applications should focus on infants and young children (to age six years) and emphasize the role of home environment and the influence of family/extended family members and parents (including guardians/substantial care-providers) within the child’s home environment.  The direct goal of this initiative is to fund research that will advance knowledge for innovative approaches to the prevention or management of overweight in children less than 6 years of age, with potential for future research clinical trial applications either in the home or linked to a community setting.  Research should consider the role of families in the initiation, support, and reinforcement of fundamental food and beverage consumption, physical activity practices, and sedentary behaviors. 

In addition it is of interest to elucidate various underlying behavioral determinants that are crucial to initiate or sustain changes in behaviors that impact energy balance.  Research designs may include linkages with other settings (e.g., daycare, pre-school, or other community venues) or other care providers (e.g., health care providers or teachers) but must include infants or children less than age six years as the primary study participant along with parents, and/or other family members residing with the child.  The overarching goal is to identify interventions that influence parent and child behaviors that contribute to inappropriate weight gain, and thereby improve subsequent health status in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood for which overweight is a known risk factor.

The goal of this funding opportunity is to advance the discovery of new, efficacious therapies for the treatment, delay of progression, or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and age-related cognitive decline. This funding opportunity announcement encourages the early stages of drug discovery necessary to identify promising disease-modifying therapies as well as treatments aimed at ameliorating the cognitive and neuropsychiatric/behavioral symptoms characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Found Animals Foundation, Inc. (Found Animals) is a privately funded, non-profit organization dedicated to minimizing shelter euthanasia. Found Animals creates programs designed to reduce shelter intake, increase live release rates and focuses on developing cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable animal welfare business models.

The project is supported by the International Science Linkages (ISL) program. The ISL program supports professional Australian scientists, from both the public and private sectors, to collaborate with international partners on leading edge science and technology in order to contribute to Australia's economic, social and environmental wellbeing. The objectives of the ISL program are to increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T) through:

Australian researchers travelling to Europe may receive a grant in aid of up to $5,000 for a STSM, covering a return airfare of up to $2,500 and daily living allowances. Daily living allowances, covering accommodation and meals are provided at the rate of $200 per day or a maximum of $2,500 per month, whichever is the smaller amount.

The International Seminars Support Scheme (ISSS) is an Australian Government aid activity administered by AusAID.  The scheme helps to develop knowledge and technical expertise in developing countries, and builds linkages between the government, academic and community sectors in Australia and our partner developing countries.

ISSS is a discretionary scheme. Funds are limited and competition for them is strong. Applications need to provide a convincing case for support, with clear objectives and details of how they will be achieved. Successful applications must demonstrate tangible outcomes and practical contributions to the economic development/social advancement of developing countries.

An application must be submitted at least three months prior to a seminar. AusAID requires this time to complete its administrative processes. Applications may be submitted up to 12 months in advance of the scheduled seminar date.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks to stimulate and support research on the determination of efficacy and potency of interventions that utilize technological tools (e.g., mobile enabling technologies, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), enhanced Medication Event Monitoring System, computer software, portable digital devices, cell phone and/or Digital Assistant Device among others) to foster adherence to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) treatment regimens among substance abusing populations in naturally occurring timeframes and contexts.

Multidisciplinary collaboration between social scientists, medical (physician/nurse) researchers and technology experts to develop and refine mobile technological instrumentation, e-health technology and software as interventions (or as part of interventions) that foster adherence to HIV treatment regimens and access to care in real time is encouraged.

NIDA intends to commit up to US$1.5 million in total costs in FY 2010 and 1.5 million in FY 11 to support 6-9 new projects in this scheme.

The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA), with the support of the International Science Linkage Program (ISL) run by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Research (DIISR), is developing new Joint-Action Bilateral Research Collaborations that will support collaborative research projects by social scientists from Australia and selected partner nations.

This competitive program welcomes and encourages applications from Early Career Researchers, and multidisciplinary collaborations. Grants of AU$7,500 will be available to successful proposals from collaborating applicants comprising one Australian researcher and one researcher from one of partner nations: Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund (the Fund) was established in 2003 as part of an historic agreement for Australia to supply LNG to China. The fund supports activities aimed at establishing genuine, long-term partnerships within the energy sector that create positive economic and environmental outcomes, increase knowledge and skills, particularly in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, and enhance the relationship between Australia and China.

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund provides opportunities for training, scholarships, research and technology transfer between China and Australia in the natural gas and LNG industry. It has a focus on increasing knowledge about the natural gas production-to-consumption chain including liquefaction, transport, re-gasification, distribution, engineering and procurement.

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and related blood disorders. Through its National Research Program, the Foundation seeks to foster innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of these cancers, and the care of patients and families.   PhD scholarships will initially be awarded for a maximum of three years.  Recipients may be eligible for one six month extension subject to application and consideration by the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee. The value of the Scholarships are $40,000 pa.
  

• PhD Scholarships (Clinical): Candidates will be expected to have completed, or almost completed, their advanced medical training in haematology.  The scholarship is intended to assist in the conduct of research in the field of malignant haematology. The Foundation’s fellowships and scholarships program aims to encourage talented young students, medical graduates and researchers to pursue a career in basic, applied or translational research to find cures and better ways to care for patients and families living with haematological malignancies.

The Leukaemia Foundation calls for applications from final year undergraduates, postgraduates, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and medical graduates with relevant advanced medical training to apply for Honours year scholarships, PhD scholarships, and Post Doctoral Fellowships, respectively. These awards are to commence in early 2010 in a field relevant to leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma or related disorders. The fellowships and scholarships will be offered to people eligible to enrol to undertake full time research or study in an Australian University, affiliated Medical Research Institute, Public Hospital, or Public Benevolent Institution.

The Fellowship aims to:

• Facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology;
• Exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioural, and epidemiological areas of cancer research, and in cancer control and prevention;
• Acquire up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic and therapeutic expertise.

Applications are encouraged in the fields of cancer control and prevention, epidemiology and cancer registration, public education, and behavioural sciences. The short-term Fellowships permit successful candidates to spend up to 3 months at a suitable host institute abroad. They are particularly aimed at investigators and clinicians working in places where such teaching is not yet available and where the necessary facilities exist to apply and disseminate the new skills upon return.

About 120 - 150 awards are available per year with an average award value for one month stipend and travel of US$3,400. Qualified cancer investigators should be in the early stages in their careers whilst clinicians should be well established in their oncology practice. Applications are invited for postdoctoral bursaries from candidates in any area of the Humanities and Social Sciences, whose work falls within the scope of one of the Institute for Advanced Studies' current research themes or across disciplinary boundaries in the Humanities. The Australian Academy of the Humanities is offering up to ten Fellowships to improve the capacity of Australian scholars to conduct research in all parts of the world.

Travelling Fellowships of up to $4,000 for short-term - not less than two weeks - research abroad in the coming year, are available to permanent resident scholars in Australia and working in the field of the Humanities (The Arts; Asian Studies; Cultural and Communication Studies; Classics; Literature; European Languages and Cultures; History; Linguistics; Philosophy, Religion and the History of Ideas; Archaeology) who require access to resources held overseas.

The Humanities Travelling Fellowships also incorporate two new programmes in 2009, the 'Embassy of France in Australia Humanities Travelling Fellowships' and the 'Ernst Keller European Travelling Fellowships'. The application form for the Humanities Travelling Fellowships is common to all three Fellowships, and they are governed by the same rules, with the exceptions noted for each individual Fellowship below.

Project Fellowship grants support artists to develop significant creative and/or developmental projects. Up to three Project Fellowships will be awarded in 2010.

Individuals, groups and organisations can apply to the Australia Council for funding. Individuals must be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia. Proof of citizenship or residency may be required. Applications may be accepted from non-Australian individuals or organisations for projects that meet the purpose of the category and mainly involve artists or arts workers who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia invites you to nominate candidates for the PCFA Prize and Lecture for Outstanding Excellence in Prostate Cancer Research and the PCFA Young Investigator of the Year Award, honoring two generations of scientists in the prostate cancer research field.

The PCFA Prize and Lecture for Outstanding Excellence in Prostate Cancer Research will be presented to an outstanding Australian scientist for his or her seminal contributions to the field of prostate cancer research. Such investigations must have been conducted in basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological, or behavioural science in prostate cancer research. Furthermore, these studies must indicate a major impact on the field, as well as stimulating new directions in this important area.

The Young Investigator of the Year Award will be presented to the most accomplished young scientist in the prostate cancer field.
Both awards will be announced at the 2nd PCFA International Meeting held in Brisbane 6-8th August 2010, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Australia.

The winning entry for the Michelson Prize in Reproductive Biology will have, at minimum, the following characteristics:

• Single dose, non-surgical sterilant
• Safe and effective in male and female, cats and dogs
• Suitable for administration in a field setting
• Viable pathway to regulatory approval
• Reasonable manufacturing process and cost

All prize claims will be reviewed by Found Animals and their scientific advisors. Claimants will be required to submit a data package demonstrating satisfactory achievement of the prize criteria.
