Outstanding Results from National Heart Foundation
The University received notification of some outstanding results from the National Heart Foundation Grants-in-Aid. The University of Adelaide had a total of 7 Grants-in-Aid funded - including one project which was the highest ranked application of 2006. This represents a success rate of 44% for the University of Adelaide, with a total of $736, 067 awarded over 2 years. In total, 41 groups have been offered first round Grants-in-Aid this year, representing a national success rate of 23%.
NHMRC Applicant Workshop - Dementia Research Grants Program
The NHMRC, together with the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, is conducting a workshop on Policy Relevance and Methodology for potential applicants for strategic awards in dementia research. The aim of the Dementia Research Grants Program is to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers through research into identified gaps in applied and translational dementia research.
WORKSHOP DATE: 27 November 2006.
LOCATION: Stamford Plaza Hotel, North Terrace Adelaide SA.
TIME: 10am ? 4pm
COST: Free
The workshop will provide practical advice and support to potential applicants
to increase the quality and competitiveness of
applications. 90 places are available and registration is essential no later than

Suspension of GRDC eConcept Scheme
As seasonal forecasts for the grains industry continue to be poor, the GRDC is unable to proceed with E-concept investments at this time. Therefore the GRDC wish to advise researchers not to submit an E-concept application until notification stating otherwise is displayed on the website.
Volvo Environment Prize
The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation invites universities, research institutes, scientists and engineers in the field of environmental protection, life sciences, earth sciences and social sciences, by national academies of science and their staff as well as other persons and organisations to submit nominations for the 2007 Volvo Environment Prize.
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for Outstanding innovations or
discoveries scientific, socio-economic, or technological which have direct or
indirect significance in the environmental field and are of global or regional
importance. Nominations must be submitted by 1 December 2006 (aply direct).

NHMRC - Palliative Care Research Program Training Awards
The Palliative Care Research Program is a joint initiative between the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Department of Health and Ageing. The Program aims to improve the quality of palliative care by funding research and research capacity building initiatives, including offering training awards. The program seeks to provide a platform to assist the palliative care research community to develop experience and skills to enable them to successfully attract funding from other sources. QANTAS Researcher Travel Support Scheme for Emerging Researchers
Applications are invited for awards from the 2006 Qantas Researcher Travel
Support Scheme. Applicants should be early researchers at the University of Adelaide
actively engaged in research and seeking to develop their research profile and
support through engagement in the international research community. This scheme
will provide support for the full air travel component of strategic research activities
such as:
· presentations at international/overseas national conferences,
· visits to and work undertaken at overseas research groups and laboratories
or specialist facilities
· study leave for these purposes.

ARC Linkage Projects Now Open
ARC Linkage-Projects aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide opportunities for Postdoctoral and Postgraduate researchers to pursue high quality research collaboration with external organisations.
Applications are now available in GAMS.

The University Of Adelaide and CSIRO Health Sciences And Nutrition Collaborative Grants Program - The Brailsford Robertson Award 2007 - 2008
The University of Adelaide and CSIRO Human Nutrition are jointly funding an award of $200,000 to encourage collaborative research into life sciences between members of the two organisations. Where appropriate, industry and/or international collaboration will be highly regarded.
The award will fund a collaborative research project between members of the two organisations, recognising the contribution of Professor T Brailsford Robertson to the University of Adelaide as Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry (1919-1927) and to CSR (later CSIRO) as Chief of the Division of Animal Nutrition (1927-1930).
Projects with the potential to forge links with international research institutes in food, nutrition and health are strongly encouraged, as are those with the potential to lead to more significant research programs, which would have the capacity to attract funding and support from sources external to the University and the CSIRO.
An amount up to a total of $200,000 over two years will be awarded to the successful applicant team.
Proposals for the Brailsford Robertson Award for 2007-2008 are now invited from members of the University and CSIRO Human Nutrition.

Prizes
Florey Medal & Prize
The 2006 Merck Sharp & Dohme Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian, or Australians, for a milestone achievement in biomedical science and human health advancement arising from research carried out in Australia. The Award carries a prize of $25,000. Nominations for the 2006 Merck Sharpe & Dohme Florey Medal should be received by the Florey Medal Selection Committee by 23 November 2006 (apply direct). Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History
The Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History 2006 will be awarded to an individual or group, for an outstanding publication or body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history. The prize comprises an embossed gold medal and a grant of $100,000.
The subjects of work submitted could include, but are not limited to:
- historical events
- hisorical figures (including biographies); and
- work covering a particular subject.
Eligible nominations can include a published book, a documentary film, a documentary for radio or television, CD-ROM, DVD, other form of multimedia or a series of these works. Submissions must have been first published, produced or broadcast between 20 September 2004 and 20 September 2006. Nominations close (apply direct) on 17 November 2006. 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Awards
The NSW Literary Awards were established to honour distinguished achievement by Australian writers. Nominations are sought for the Christina Stead Prize, the UTS Award for New Writing, the Douglas Stewart Prize, the Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Patricia Wrightson Prize, the Ethel Turner Prize, the Play Award, the Script Writing Award, the Community Relations Commission For a multicultural NSW Award, and the Gleebooks Prize. Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards
The purpose of the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards is to acknowledge, encourage and most importantly promote the positive achievements of young South Australians aged between 14 and 26 years of age. The Awards recognise the achievements of South Australias youth in nine categories, which are:

Australian Institute of Urban Studies (South Australia) Early Career Research Prize
The AIUS Urban Studies Early Career Research Prize is an annual prize of $1,500 awarded for an outstanding research paper by an Early Career Researcher addressing an urban theme of relevance to South Australia. Rolex Awards for Enterprise
For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support
for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.
The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise.
